Who was Mao Zedong?

• The leader of the communist party who won control
  of China in 1949.
• The idea of Communism was established by the
  German born political economist Karl Marx in the
  mid-1800s.
• Question How can Mao establish a communist
  nation in China?

Karl Marx

• In the mid 1800s German born economic historian
  Karl Marx put together a theory called Communism.
• His theory was based on the idea that the story
  of history is a struggle between the haves and
  the have nots.
• The haves exploited the have nots and captured
  the surplus.
• He predicted that the have nots would over throw
  the haves in a violent and bloody revolution
  during the final days of capitalism.

Maos three main goals of the Communist Revolution

• 1.) Better life for the poor
• 2.) Development of a modern economy
• 3.) Restore Chinas position as a major world
  power

Obstacles to these goals

• Huge population that needed to be fed, clothed,
  housed, and educated
• Years of war had disrupted farming destroyed
  Chinas few industries
• China didnt have the technology to modernize, or
  money

Reorganization of agriculture

• 1.) Land taken from large landowners
  redistributed to landless farm families
• 2.) In the early 1950s, private ownership of
  land ended with the establishment of collective
  farms.

Collective Farms

• The government forced the peasants to pool their
  land, labor, and tools.
• The members of the collective farms worked for
  the state received a share of the harvest.
• Any surplus went to the government

  rice each year to survive

  several villages, thousands of acres of land, and
  as many as 20,000 people
• At first, men women were divided into separate
  dormitories.
