The Media Center Website
  • http//www.hillsdale.k12.oh.us/hhs/library
  • This website is linked to many helpful resources
for students in performing research for classes
  • You can request specific Pathfinders lists of
helpful websites for particular topics of
interest/study just let Mrs.Stump know what you
    need!
  • You can also find card catalogs for Hillsdale and
    local public libraries here
  • Email is possible for students requesting
accounts and is accessed here as well

16
Overview of Website Links
17
A Brief History of the Internet
  • In the late 1970s, it became apparent that using
only print resources (books) was not sufficient
for research. Around this time, people could go
to the public library and pay a fee to retrieve
information they desired from online resources.
  • In the late 1980s, compilation of material began
to be made available through CDROMs. As more
people had access to computers, the demand to
store and retrieve vast quantities of data
    increased.
  • The world wide web began in 1989 and allowed
the introduction of graphics, media, video, and
links to various sites on the Internet.

18
History and Usage
  • Hillsdale uses the browser Internet Explorer, and
our computer access is provided by TCCSA
    (Tri-County Computer Services Association). We
have a filtering system called BESS, which
permits access to MOST material, but screens out
those sites deemed to be offensive to the
    majority in the school setting.
  • Students SHOULD NOT be changing control settings
including proxy server, wallpaper, icons, display
screen, etc. or be using floppy or CD disks
    without permission!

19
How websites are classified
  • Look for the domain name the ending of the
web address to tell you the purpose of the site
  • Some common domains are
  • COM commercial
  • EDU education
  • GOV government
  • MIL military
  • NET network
  • ORG organization
  • If youre looking for research information, try
using .edu sites instead of .com sites!

20
Publishing a Website
  • Remember that ANYONE can put ANYTHING on the web
just because you find it on a website does NOT
make it reliable or accurate information!
  • Verify all sources, cite them appropriately in
your reports (help available under the Tutorials
tab on the Media Center website) and make sure
that you RESEARCH the material you find online!
  • It is better to use databases for research,
    rather than general search engines.

21
Board Policy
  • It is a requirement of the School Board that
students and parents sign the Acceptable Use
Policy form and it be kept on file in the Media
Center signed forms from 2002-2003 are still
good for the 2003-2004 school year.
  • Be sure to complete this form as soon as possible
    and return to Mrs. Stump
  • Students signing in for computer use will be
checked periodically for verification of a form
on file and may be denied computer access if one
    is not present!

22
Username and Password
  • Username is the last two digits of graduation
    year, first initial, last name
  • New Password users will need to see Mrs. Fitch
(for those returning students its what you
used last year) then you will change it to
something with at least 5 characters, easy to
remember, hard for someone else to guess
  • DO NOT SHARE PASSWORD INFO
  • Password problems/issues should be addressed with
    Mrs. Fitch, District Technology Coordinator

23
Printing and Saving
  • Please be a responsible and conservative user of
    materials!
  • Save all data to your folder on the server
  • Exception MP3 and avi files should be saved to
the MM_Lib library folder (on the same level as
    the folder named Students)

24
Print Policies
  • Highlight material you want to print
  • Choose FILE, PRINT, SELECTION, OK
  • OR
  • Cut and Paste the material to be printed into a
word processing document and then print from
    there
  • DO NOT PRINT ENTIRE WEB PAGES!
  • At the present time, the color printer (the 4550)
is not operational if you need to change
printers, use the pull-down menu to select one
the 4100 PCL 6-2 is located by the windows and
the 4100 PCL 6-1 is the printer by the
    Circulation Desk.

25
Common Errors
  • These are the most common problems students
encounter working with the equipment be sure to
read the solutions and save yourself some
    headaches!
  • 1. Losing Everything after working on it all
    period!
  • 2. Copying material at home and finding it wont
work on the machines at school
  • 3. Receiving temporary files in your folder
    instead of saved documents

26
Lost It All?
  • This can be the most frustrating problem of all.
  • SOLUTION SAVE, SAVE, SAVE!
  • Each time you make a slide, complete a paragraph,
go to a new task be sure to save frequently and
to your folder on the server not just the hard
    drive of your local machine!

27
Had it at homecant find it now?
  • SOLUTION
  • Be sure to use the very same version of the
Office package as we have here at school OR save
your work as a rich text document NOT a regular
word document (Mrs. Stump or Mr. Selvage can show
    you how).

28
Temporary FilesProblems Saving?
  • SOLUTION BE PATIENT!
  • When you save,be sure to give the computer time
to do the job do not shut down or switch to
another application until the save process is
    finished
  • Always verify the material actually saved in your
folder on the server before shutting down for the
    day.

29
Saving and Shut Down
  • Be sure to save all materials to your folder on
the server. You can access this by selecting
from the pull-down menu USERS ON HIHS U, choose
the folder Students and the year of your
graduation. Find your folder (alphabetical order
by your first initial) and save materials there
NOT TO THE LOCAL MACHINE OR IT WILL BE LOST!
  • At the conclusion of each class period, please
SHUT DOWN your computer terminal and manually
turn off the monitor, if it does not do so
    automatically for you.

30
Conclusion
  • Where to go if you need help
