The Films Division was constituted in January
1948 by re-christening the erstwhile Information
Films of India and the Indian New Parade set up
in 1943, primarily for war coverage. The
Cinematograph Act of 1918 was Indianised in 1952
which made the screening of documentary films
compulsory throughout the country.
4CINEMA OF INDIA
The cinema of India consists of films produced
across India, including the cinematic culture of
Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat, Karnataka,
Kerala, Maharashtra, Orissa, Punjab, Tamil Nadu,
and West Bengal. Indian films came to be followed
throughout South Asia and the Middle East.
5In the 20th century, Indian cinema, along with
the American and Chinese film industries, became
a global enterprise.Enhanced technology paved the
way for upgradation from established cinematic
norms of delivering product, radically altering
the manner in which content reached the target
audience.Indian cinema found markets in over 90
countries where films from India are screened.
6Following the screening of the moving pictures in
London 1895 cinema became a sensation across
Europe and by July 1896 the films had been in
show in Bombay (now Mumbai). The first short
films in India were directed by Hiralal Sen.,
starting with The Flower of Persia 1898.

8Influences
There have generally been six major influences
that have shaped the conventions of Indian
popular cinema. The first was the ancient Indian
epics of Mahabharata and Ramayana which have
exerted a profound influence on the thought and
imagination of Indian popular cinema,
particularly in its narratives. Examples of this
influence include the techniques of a side story,
back-story and story within a story.

Following India's independence, the period from
the late 1940s to the 1960s are regarded by film
historians as the 'Golden Age' of Indian cinema.
Some of the most critically acclaimed Indian
films of all time were produced during this
period.

14Hollywood is a neighbor in Los Angeles,
California - situated west-northwest of Downtown
Los Angeles. Due to its fame and cultural
identity as the historical center of movie
studios and movie stars, the word "Hollywood" is
often used as a metonym of American cinema, and
is often interchangeably used to refer to the
greater Los Angeles area in general. The
nicknames StarStruck Town and Tinseltownrefer to
Hollywood and its movie industry.
15By 1920 Hollywood had become world famous as the
center of the United States film industry. In
1918, HJ Whitley commissioned architect A.S.
Barnes to design Whitley Heights as a
Mediterranean-style village on the steep
hillsides above Hollywood Boulevard, and it
became the first celebrity community.The
neighborhood is roughly bordered on the north and
east by Cahuenga Boulevard, on the west by
Highland Avenue.
16Government protection
As the advent of television threatened the
success of cinema, countries were faced with the
problem of reviving movie-going. The French
cinema market, and more generally the
French-speaking market, is smaller than the
English-speaking market, one reason being that
some major markets such as the United States are
fairly reluctant to import foreign
moviescitation needed. As a consequence, French
movies have to be amortized on a relatively small
market and thus generally have budgets far lower
than their American counterparts, ruling out
expensive settings and special effects
17History
The French film industry in the late 19th Century
and early 20th Century was among the world's most
important. Auguste and Louis Lumière invented the
cinématographe and their L'Arrivée d'un train en
gare de La Ciotat in Paris in 1895 is considered
by many historians as the official birth of
cinematography.
18The French government has implemented various
measures aimed at supporting local film
production and movie theaters. The Canal TV
channel has a broadcast license requiring it to
support the production of movies. Some taxes are
levied on movies and TV channels for use as
subsidies for movie production, some tax breaks
are given for investment in movie productions,
and the sale of DVDs and videocassettes of movies
shown in theaters is prohibited for six months
after the showing in theaters, so as to ensure
some revenue for movie theaters.
