Title: Pre-Enrolment meeting between Programme Managers and Students:
1School of Earth Environment
- Pre-Enrolment meeting between Programme Managers
and Students - Year 1
2Learning outcomes
- Year 1
- Bring everyone up-to-speed with geology and
related earth science topics, plus maths and
chemistry. - Year 2
- More detailed studies of geology, plus the
application of other scientific disciplines where
appropriate. - Application of geological information to
situations outside the context of original study. - Learn to critically evaluate the methods used to
generate primary data and for the interpretation
of those data.

4Pathways within the GS programme
- What are pathways?
- Coherent groupings of modules chosen to give you
the best preparation for particular branches of
geology - Who says they are the best portfolios?
- Colleagues in industry who will be in a position
to employ you
5Pathways within the GS programme
- 'Geology pathway' provides candidates with the
opportunity to undertake a broad and balanced
programme of study that provides general coverage
of all of the key areas within the
discipline.'Petroleum pathway' provides training
in exploration geophysics, sedimentology,
structural geology, and resource geology it is
recommended for candidates intending to pursue a
career in the hydrocarbons industry.'Minerals
pathway' provides a background in ore geology,
mineral exploration and structural geology it is
recommended for candidates intending to pursue a
career in the extractive (mineral
exploration/quarrying/ mining) industry.
Environment pathway A route through the degree
programme designed to prepare graduates for
employment in the environmental science sector,
where the practical application of geological
principals is used to solve environmental
problems. - Regardless of which pathway is followed,
successful completion of the programme (which is
accredited by the Geological Society) will lead
to the degree qualification of BSc Geological
Sciences. Nothing different on transcript but
useful on CV, and for references.
6Is the geology pathway non vocational?
Core GS programme
Basic high quality grounding for all aspects of
geological employment
Pathway
Added value in specific fields of employability
7The Minerals pathway
A route through the degree programme designed to
prepare graduates for employment in the mining
and minerals sector
EXIT POINTS
Industry
Postgraduate study
Exploration Geology
Mining Geology
Leeds Msc Structural/Mining
P/G study elsewhere (inc. overseas)
Major companies Australia, Pacific Rim, S.
America
Major or minor companies, jobs worldwide
New for 2011
UK, Canada, Australia
8- Choices on the minerals pathway
- Are designed to give a portfolio which gives you
the best - platform in the international jobs market
- BUT one area where we lag behind overseas
Universities is in the ability to get you
industrial experience/exposure. You can solve
this up to a point by joining
9Leeds Chapter of The Society of Economic Geology
(SEG)
Field trips over and above those in the curricula
10SEG has a programme of speakers from industry
11After Leeds
The SEG Chapter Industrial advisor plays a key
role in advising students on the current
opportunities.
Our graduates are working in Australia coal,
diamond and iron ore mining, gold exploration
Africa and Canada gold exploration
Contacts with industry are already strong and
continually increasing. These will continue to
enhance the employability of Leeds graduates.
The bourgeoning activities of the SEG chapter
will establish further contacts through
fieldtrips, speakers and contacts made by alumni.
12SEG AGM TODAY RS 19 at 3.00pm.
13The Petroleum Pathway
School of Earth and Environment FACULTY OF
ENVIRONMENT
A route through the degree programme designed to
prepare graduates for employment in the petroleum
and hydrocarbon industry
14What is the Petroleum Pathway?
School of Earth and Environment FACULTY OF
ENVIRONMENT
- Gives specific knowledge related to the petroleum
and hydrocarbon industry - Focuses on the most relevant subjects
- Structural geology
- Geophysics
- Sedimentology
- Petroleum Geoscience
- Gives great preparation for a career in the
petroleum industry or postgraduate study in
related subjects
15Why take the Petroleum Pathway?
School of Earth and Environment FACULTY OF
ENVIRONMENT
- Hydrocarbon extraction will be an important part
of the global economy for at least the next 50
years - Oil and gas is more environmentally friendly than
coal which is the alternative bridging energy - Starting salaries in the UK are 35k (with MSc)
- Starting salaries in the USA are 125k (with
MSc)
16Petroleum expertise at Leeds
School of Earth and Environment FACULTY OF
ENVIRONMENT
- World leading expertise in Structural Geology,
Geophysics, Sedimentology and Petroleum
Geoscience - World class research facilities available for
use in 3rd year projects - Dedicated Centre for Integrated Petroleum
Engineering and Geoscience - Brings together world leading researchers from
Engineering and Earth Sciences - Supports student engagement with industry through
student chapters
17Added value
School of Earth and Environment FACULTY OF
ENVIRONMENT
- American Association of Petroleum Geologists
(AAPG) - Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain
- Mentoring scheme
- Rewards for achievement
- Funding for further study (e.g. MSc fees)
- Fieldtrips
- Seminars
- Courses
- Free membership to professional societies
18Industry Links
School of Earth and Environment FACULTY OF
ENVIRONMENT
- BP has donated 1.1million to the University in
Scholarship awards more details on the website
(http//www.leeds.ac.uk/ace/PS/BP.html) - We have close links with Major and National Oil
Companies who support both Undergraduate and
Postgraduate courses (e.g. BP, Shell, HESS and
service companies such as Schlumberger) - Access to Petroleum Industry recruitment talks
company representatives visit Leeds and hold
initial interviews here - Careers fair held annually in Leeds, 2011 event
sponsored by BP - A number of National Oil Companies (including
Saudi Aramco, Qatar Petroleum and Petroleum
Development Oman) sponsor students through our
Undergraduate courses as they feel we provide
quality training for direct entry into their
business

21Added value
Teaching staff have strong links with employers
in the Environmental sector, often exploited to
support teaching via the Case Studies Module.
LEGS Leeds Environmental Geology Society
We also use our links with industry to gain
placements on our Year in Industry degree
option ( e.g, at White Young Green Komex)
22What if I dont know whether Im interested in
this ?
There are students societies (Roc-Soc. and
Enviro-Soc.) who organise and host talks form
guest speakers and key staff on research and
industry related current topics in Hydrogeology,
Environmental Geochemistry and Engineering
Geology. Key first year modules (some of which
you may have taken as options) can give you a
flavour for what the pathway offers Intro to the
Environment, Water Resources, Introductory
Hydrogeology, Environmental Science Skills,
Natural Hazards.

31- Feedback has been a major LT theme for 2011,
where we aimed to raise the profile of provision
of feedback amongst staff and encourage students
to engage with feedback accordingly. - In order to get the most from feedback, bear in
mind the following - Anticipate and actively look for all forms of
feedback - Engage fully with all feedback that you receive
- Engage with all coursework and feedback, whether
assessed for marks or not. - Ask for help if do not understand the feedback
you receive, and ask for more feedback if you
feel you arent getting enough - Feedback is your main route to improvement, so
- dont miss out!!
32Feedback forms
- Before we let you out of this room please
complete the Year 1 review feedback forms. - Consider acting as a representative on the School
Student-Staff Committee. If interested see Rob or
Graham.
