2BRIDGING THE MEDITERRANEAN The Athens Business
Forum
- The Union for the Mediterranean launched in 2008
has created lots of expectations for revitalising
the cooperation of all business communities of
the countries concerned. A new political will has
been expressed at high level for the
transformation of the Mediterranean basin to an
area of sustainable development, economic
integration and social cohesion. - Following the very successful Med Business
Days organised by MEDEF in Marseille last year
and the previous events in Valencia and Palermo,
SEV Hellenic Federation of Enterprises hosts the
next edition of the major Euro-Mediterranean
Business Forum Bridging the Mediterranean The
Athens Business Forum, which will be held in
Athens at Divani Apollon Palace Spa (Kavouri),
from July 8th to 10th, 2009. The Forum aims at
creating a challenging debate between political
leaders and decision makers for the examination
of the progress made so far in the Union for the
Mediterranean, the anticipated outcomes, the new
investment opportunities in the region, the
available financial tools and the factors which
affect flow of FDI and trade. The Forum will also
provide an optimum platform for businessmen and
executives from all participating countries in
order to meet potential partners, discuss on
existing cooperations or explore new ones and
enhance their market share. Participating to
the Forum will be a great occasion for
Euro-Mediterranean enterprises to encourage
Governments and Authorities to proceed with
reforms and create favourable business
environment in order to increase trade and
investment figures in the region. Finally, more
than 1000 B2B meetings are expected to be
conducted, out of which it is estimated that 50
may come up with new business deals.

- The Forum is taking place against a backdrop of
the most severe economic crises of the post World
War II world. A crisis that calls for coordinated
and effective efforts by all stake holders to
redress the balance between real economic growth
and social justice. The Conference will be rich
in topics and issues that center on the future of
the Euro-Mediterranean relations in all its
various aspects and especially on investment
flows, the transfer of technology,
entrepreneurial, innovation and labour skills.
The Athens Agenda reflects the position,
commitment and determination of the entire
business community to implement an accelerated
process that will eventually lead to economic
development, social cohesion and prosperity in
all the countries of the Mediterranean region. - The Mediterranean region is open to the world and
to challenges brought by globalisation,
especially in the framework of current recession
and economic setback. All Mediterranean countries
have to open new options towards renewed
Mediterranean development policies, to the active
participation of firms and societies in a
mutually beneficial co-development and regional
integration. Cooperation from both sides of the
Mediterranean basin implies teamwork, coherence,
planning, multilateral networking, a spirit of
both north-south and south-south linkage. The
Union for the Mediterranean, a project-oriented
initiative, may become the new locomotive on
which all stakeholders are called to embark.
