Chapter 7 Operating Systems and Utility Programs
2
Today
  • Systems Software
  • 3 types of Operating Systems
  • 10 functions of the operating system
  • 8 utility functions
  • What are the 6 parts of the IT model?

3
Software the instructions that tell the
computer what to do and how.
  • Application Software
  • Programs designed to make users more productive
  • The reason to own a computer
  • Systems Software
  • Programs that control the operations of a
    computer
  • Operating system
  • Utilities

4
System Software
  • What is system software?

Programs that control operation of computer
Two types are operating systems and utility
programs
p. 250 - 251

The Operating Systems
  • Stand-alone Operating System
  • Windows XP
  • Windows Vista
  • Mac OS X
  • UNIX
  • Network Operating System
  • Windows Server
  • NetWare
  • Unix, Linux
  • Solaris
  • Embedded
  • PDAs
  • Palm OS

Operating Systems
  • What are the functions of an operating system?

p. 251 Fig. 7-1
7
1) Starting a computer
  • What is booting?
  • Process of starting or restarting a computer
  • Cold boot Turning on computer that has been
    powered off
  • Warm boot Restarting computer that is powered on

p. 252 Fig. 7-2
8
2) Providing a user interface
  • What is a user interface?
  • Controls how you communicate with the computer

9
3)Managing Programs
  • What is multitasking?
  • Working on two or more programs that reside in
    memory at same time
  • Foreground contains program you are using
  • Background contains programs that are running
    but are not in use

p. 253 - 254 Fig. 7-4

4) Managing Memory
  • Memory management is making the best use of RAM
  • With virtual memory (VM), portion of hard disk is
    allocated to function as RAM

p. 255
11
5) Scheduling jobs
  • Spooling is sending print jobs to buffer instead
    of directly to printer
  • Print jobs line up in queue

p. 256 Fig. 7-5

Operating System Functions
  • 5) Configuring devices
  • What is a driver?

p. 256
13
Operating System Functions
  • 6) Establishing an Internet Connection
  • How do you establish an Internet connection?
  • Windows XP includes New Connection Wizard
  • Guides user through setting up connection between
    computer and Internet

p. 256 - 257 Fig. 7-6

Operating System Functions
  • 7) Monitoring Performance
  • How does an operating system monitor performance?
  • Provides program, called performance monitor,
that assesses and reports information about
    system resources and devices

p. 257
15
Operating System Functions
  • 8) Providing File management and other Utilities
  • What is a utility program?
  • System software that performs maintenance-type
    tasks
  • Also called utility

p. 259 Fig. 7-8

Operating System Functions
  • 9) Controlling a Network
  • What is a network operating system?
  • Allows users to share printer, Internet access,
files, and programs on a network

10) Administers security by establishing user
name and password for each user
p. 257 - 258 Fig. 7-7
17
Finish the paragraph
  • The most important thing I learned today about
    the operating system is that?
  • This will be collected and count as your
    attendance grade for today.

18
Remember that
  • Systems Software
  • The programs that control the operations of a
    computer
  • Operating system
  • Utilities

19
Utility programs
  1. File manager
  2. Image viewer
  3. Personal firewall
  4. Uninstaller
  5. Disk Scanner
  6. Disk Defragmenter
  7. Diagnostic utility
  8. Backup utility
  9. Screen saver

Anti-Spam Programs
Anti-Virus Programs
WebFilters
Anti-spyware
20
Situation
  • Viruses are not harmless pranks in 1999, the
Melissa virus cost an estimated 80 million in
damages. In May 2000, a virus called the Love Bug
wreaked havoc worldwide. The virus, which
targeted Microsoft Outlook users, arrived as an
attachment to e-mail messages, often from what
would appear to be a trusted source, with the
subject line, ILOVEYOU (hence the viruss
name). When the attachment was opened, the virus
sent itself to every name in the victims address
book, overwrote files on the victims hard drive,
directed the victims browser to a Web site that
downloaded a program to steal the victims
password, and then e-mailed the password to the
viruss author (who eventually was discovered and
    arrested).

21
Discuss
  • What is your opinion about computer viruses and
    people who create them?
  • What are the consequences for the individuals
involved in writing and distributing computer
    viruses?
  • Who pays the cost for these pranks?

22
Lets discuss
  • Microsoft is a large company that manufactures
and sell computer software. They make many of
the popular application software programs such as
Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Windows.
They have been targeted for criticism because of
    monopolistic business practicesboth the U.S.
Justice Department and the European Commission,
among others, brought Microsoft to court for
    antitrust violations and software bundling.

23
  • What is your opinion about Microsoft as a
    monopoly?
  • Is it good for business?,
  • Consumers?,
  • Computer developers?
