Title: Car Use at Allegheny College

1
Car Use at Allegheny College
  • Presented By
  • Tom Rowe, Scott Huckabaa, Mike Soltis,
  • Liz Colteryahn, and Tricia Gearhart
  • ES 110

2
Why Should We Reduce The Number Of Cars At
Allegheny?
  • Transportation is the largest single source of
air pollution in the United States
  • Motor vehicles cause both primary and secondary
air pollution. They emit ozone, CO2,
    particulate matter, and toxics
  • Also contributes to water pollution
  • Why Care?
  • Some fun facts about car use and its
    environmental impacts

3
Whos Driving?
  • We took a survey of 100 students
  • 67 of students surveyed drive or have driven to
    class
  • 33 do not drive at all to class
  • Of those who drove to class, 55 were male, 45
    were female
  • Of the 33 who do not drive, 60 were female, 40
    were male

4
The Greenest VS The Meanest
  • SUVs, trucks, and vans give off more pollution
    then cars
  • 70 of those surveyed drove cars
  • 30 of those surveyed drove SUVs, trucks, or
    vans
  • Average mileage per week is approximately 40
    miles/week
  • The greenest and the meanest according to the
    Union of Concerned Scientists
  • The greenest
  • GM EV1 (electric)
  • Honda Civic GX
  • Nissan Altra (electric)
  • Honda Insight
  • Toyota RAV4 (electric)
  • The meanest
  • Chevy Suburban, GMC YukonXL
  • Dodge Ram 2500
  • Ferrari 550 Maranello
  • Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra
  • Ford Excursion

5
Reasons Why Students Drive To Class
  • The weather in Meadville sucks!
  • Our college is one big hill
  • The wonderful invention that is the snooze button
  • Some people are just flat out lazy
  • Too stoned, too lazy, too late
  • Enforcement policies are sub-par
  • Allegheny College students just dont care about
    the environment
  • ASG has never really thought of global warming
to be honest. We do push for more parking on
campus and therefore encourage the use of cars by
all students. Other then that.we really dont
    discuss it.- ASG President

6
Solutions to Alleghenys Driving Problem
  • Shuttle Buses
  • Increase in parking pass prices, ticket prices,
    frequency of ticketing
  • Zone of ineligibility
  • No car privileges for freshman and sophomores

7
Shuttle Buses
  • A joint collaboration between Allegheny College
    and CATA
  • Eliminates the need for off-campus students to
    drive to class
  • Similar to the loop
  • A bus that will make a continuous loop around
Park Ave, North Main St, and Highland Ave.
Starting at Baldwin St and running all the way to
    Allegheny St.
  • Students can catch the campus loop at designated
    times and areas.
  • The campus loop will cut down on emissions
because it will eliminate/reduce the number of
cars being driven on and to campus
  • The main suggestion to the problem of those
    surveyed

8
Ticketing and Penaltie
  • Security is lazy!
  • 550 S spaces, 440 QV spaces
  • 614 issued parking passes
  • Raising the price of a parking pass from 25 to
100 in conjunction with an increase in the price
of parking tickets from 10 to 25 will deter
students from using their cars on campus
  • Once again, security is lazy

9
Freshman Shouldnt Have Cars on Campus
  • Many colleges and universities do not allow
freshman to have cars on campus. (Penn State,
    Grove City)
  • Considering the limited number of parking spots,
    let the freshman suffer!
  • Allegheny College students should not be allowed
to have a car at school until their sophomore
    year
  • INCENTIVE-If a freshman makes the Deans List in
their first semester then they can bring up a car
    a semester early

10
Zone of Ineligibility
  • A method used by Clarion University to reduce the
number of cars being driven on campus
  • Despite the recent parking issues between
Allegheny College students and the permanent
residents of Meadville, this can work
  • Students who live off-campus between Loomis and
Allegheny St, and Baldwin and Highland will be
considered ineligible for an on campus parking
    spot
  • The students will be able to take full advantage
of the proposed shuttle bus system that will run
    in the same area

11
Summary and Conclusion
  • Is it really worth the effort?
  • Students will pay the cost
  • Most realistic solutions
  • Will Allegheny College students take these
    suggestions seriously if implemented
  • This is just one of the environmental issues that
is plaguing Allegheny College. If the Allegheny
College environment is to become sustainable then
all environmental issues must be taken seriously
    and acted upon accordingly.
