• Romanticism was an artistic and intellectual
  movement that began in late 18th century during
  the Ind. Rev. and continued until the early 19th
  century.
• A revolt against upper-class, social, and
  political norms of the Enlightenment period and a
  reaction against the misuse of nature in
  literature and emphasis on reason.

• Why is it called Romanticism?

• Comes from the term "romance" which is a prose or
  poetic heroic narrative.
• Romanticism elevated the achievements of those it
  perceived as misunderstood heroic individuals and
  artists that changed society.

• What were Romantic attitudes and techniques?

• It stressed strong emotion as a source of
  artistic experience including fear, horror, and
  the awe experienced in confronting the perfection
  of nature.
• It elevated nature and custom, beyond what we
  were told to think.
• Puts imagination as a critical authority that
  permitted freedom from all original form.

  that has led to some being accused of
  irrationalism.

• Nathaniel Hawthorne, writings on the supernatural
  and human psychology.
• Washington Irving, an author known for Sleepy
  Hollow and inspired other Romantic writers.
• Edgar Allan Poe, seen as a leader of the Romantic
  Movement. Best known for his dark and mysterious
  tales.
