8Facts About The Bible
- The dead sea scrolls were not the original
scrolls of what make up the Bible today - Some of the actual parts of the original scrolls
(copies were found such as the Book of Isaiah) - They do offer proof that writings did support
the fact that the other scrolls existed long
before these were found and they supported the
former documents
9Ancient Writings
- Stone, clay, wood, pottery, leather and Papyrus
were found with ancient writings - Leather (animal skins) appear to have been the
material mainly used by the Hebrews for the Old
Testament and papyrus (plant material) used for
the first writings of the New Testament with the
average roll being about 30 ft long and 9 to 10
inches wide. At first it was read on the ground
and then about 600 years later books for formed. - For about 1000 years parchment was used in
making of some of the first copies of the NT
10First Person Commanded to Write
- Moses (1500 BC) was the first person mentioned
to write down Gods Commands but wrote about
things many thousands of years prior to his
birth. - Ex 1714 And the Lord said unto Moses, Write
this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in
the ears of Joshua for I will utterly put out
the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven. - Ex 244 And Moses wrote all the words of the
Lord, and rose up early in the morning, and
builded an altar under the hill, and twelve
pillars, according to the twelve tribes of
Israel. - Ex 3427 And the Lord said unto Moses, Write
thou these words for after the tenor of these
words I have made a covenant with thee and with
Israel
11First Person Commanded to Write
- Num 332 And Moses wrote their goings out
according to their journeys by the commandment of
the Lord and these are their journeys according
to their goings out. - Deut 3124-26 And it came to pass, when Moses had
made an end of writing the words of this law in a
book, until they were finished, 25 That Moses
commanded the Levites, which bare the ark of the
covenant of the Lord, saying, 26 Take this book
of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of
the covenant of the Lord your God, that it may be
there for a witness against thee.
12The Bible Mentions Others
- Josh 2426 And Joshua wrote these words in the
book of the law of God, and took a great stone,
and set it up there under an oak, that was by the
sanctuary of the Lord. - 1 Sam 1025 Then Samuel told the people the
manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book,
and laid it up before the Lord. And Samuel sent
all the people away, every man to his house. - Jer 362 Take thee a roll of a book, and write
therein all the words that I have spoken unto
thee against Israel, and against Judah, and
against all the nations, from the day I spake
unto thee, from the days of Josiah, even unto
this day.
13New Testament
- Gradually penned by inspired writers over 50
years from 50 to 100 A D some to churches and
some to individuals. - 1 Thess 527 I charge you by the Lord that
this epistle be read unto all the holy brethren. - 1 Peter 411 If any man speak, let him speak
as the oracles of God if any man minister, let
him do it as of the ability which God giveth
that God in all things may be glorified through
Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for
ever and ever. - 1 Cor 46 And these things, brethren, I have in
a figure transferred to myself and to Apollos for
your sakes that ye might learn in us not to
think of men above that which is written, that no
one of you be puffed up for one against another. - 1 Cor 1437 If any man think himself to be a
prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that
the things that I write unto you are the
commandments of the Lord.
14Invaluable to Determine Truth
- Acts 151-2 And certain men which came down from
Judaea taught the brethren, and said, Except ye
be circumcised after the manner of Moses, ye
cannot be saved. 2 When therefore Paul and
Barnabas had no small dissension and disputation
with them, they determined that Paul and
Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up
to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about
this question. - Acts 154-6 And when they were come to
Jerusalem, they were received of the church, and
of the apostles and elders, and they declared all
things that God had done with them. 5 But there
rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees
which believed, saying, That it was needful to
circumcise them, and to command them to keep the
law of Moses.6 And the apostles and elders came
together for to consider of this matter.
15Invaluable to Determine Truth
- Acts 157-17 And when there had been much
disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men
and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago
God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my
mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and
believe. 8 And God, which knoweth the hearts,
bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost,
even as he did unto us 9 And put no difference
between us and them, purifying their hearts by
faith. 10 Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put
a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which
neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? - 11 But we believe that through the grace of the
Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as
they. 12 Then all the multitude kept silence,
and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring
what miracles and wonders God had wrought among
the Gentiles by them. 13 And after they had
held their peace, James answered, saying, Men and
brethren, hearken unto me - 14 Simeon hath declared how God at the first did
visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people
for his name. 15 And to this agree the words of
the prophets as it is written, 16 After this I
will return, and will build again the tabernacle
of David, which is fallen down and I will build
again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up
17 That the residue of men might seek after the
Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is
called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these
things.
16Invaluable to Determine Truth
- Acts 1525-31 It seemed good unto us, being
assembled with one accord, to send chosen men
unto you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, 26
Men that have hazarded their lives for the name
of our Lord Jesus Christ. - 27 We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who
shall also tell you the same things by mouth.
28 For it seemed good to the Holy Ghost, and to
us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these
necessary things 29 That ye abstain from meats
offered to idols, and from blood, and from things
strangled, and from fornication from which if ye
keep yourselves, ye shall do well. Fare ye well.
- 30 So when they were dismissed, they came to
Antioch and when they had gathered the multitude
together, they delivered the epistle31 Which
when they had read, they rejoiced for the
consolation.
17All Matters Life Godliness
- 2 Peter 13 According as his divine power hath
given unto us all things that pertain unto life
and godliness, through the knowledge of him that
hath called us to glory and virtue - Not words of men
- 1 Thess 213 For this cause also thank we God
without ceasing, because, when ye received the
word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it
not as the word of men, but as it is in truth,
the word of God, which effectually worketh also
in you that believe.
18It was wisely said . . . . . .
- Hebrew scriptures of old spoke of the NT in
prophecy - The NT is the Hebrew scriptures fulfilled
- Jer 3131-34 Behold, the days come, saith the
Lord, that I will make a new covenant with the
house of Israel, and with the house of Judah 32
Not according to the covenant that I made with
their fathers in the day that I took them by the
hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt
which my covenant they brake, although I was an
husband unto them, saith the Lord - 33 But this shall be the covenant that I will
make with the house of Israel After those days,
saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward
parts, and write it in their hearts and will be
their God, and they shall be my people.34 And
they shall teach no more every man his neighbour,
and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord
for they shall all know me, from the least of
them unto the greatest of them, saith the Lord
for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will
remember their sin no more.
19Abraham Lincoln Once Said . . .
- I believe the Bible is the best gift God has
ever given to man. All the good from the Savior
of the world is communicated to us through this
book.
