National Trust background
  • The National Trust has LEARNING as a key
    priority.
  • Although there are national policies, their
dissemination and application is partly regional
but mainly decided by the individual properties.
  • England and Wales are covered by regional offices
where most have a Community, Learning and
Volunteering manager (details are attached as an
    appendix)
  • Some properties have learning officers.

4
National Trust background
  • The national headquarters are now located at
Heelis, Swindon (Mrs Heelis was .. ? answer at
    the end).
  • Some properties have developed resources and have
a variety of learning opportunities but it is the
decision of the property management to decide
    priorities.
  • The National Trust wish to engage with more young
people, especially secondary they are its
    future members.
  • In the South West a Wessex Curriculum Support
Group has been set up (former Wilts secondary
head, Wilts LA, NT staff including learning
    officers from the region).

5
How did we get involved?
  • Initial discussions with (Wessex Community,
Learning and Volunteering Manager to explore
    areas of common interest.
  • Further focused work with Stourhead on potential
to use the property for a range of secondary
curriculum projects potential is very large
    use your imagination
  • Decided to focus on business and leisure and
    tourism.
  • Involved subject network leaders and learning
    officer from Stourhead.
  • Joint network events held at property staff and
    students

6
Other activities
  • National Trust owns all the land around
Stonehenge but not the Stones . Local school ran
an A, G and T summer school with the NT
volunteers. Looked at aspects of archaeology,
    conservation, ecology, and marketing. Involved
Wessex Archaeology (hosts for Time Team) as well.
  • Being repeated this year as part of an activities
    week.

7
Future Plans
  • Continue with Curriculum Support Group
  • Continue Stourhead links (open to all schools
    CD resource available).

support learners in school and on the property
when working on joint NT projects.

    developments.

    NT

    of curriculum opportunities

    willingness to be involved.
