Legislative Branch
  • Has two houses, the House of Representatives and
    the Senate.
  • Both houses can propose bills.
  • For a bill to become a law, the majority would
    have to vote for it.
  • Citizens vote directly for both House and Senate
    members.
  • Members of the House must be 25 years old, while
members of the Senate must be 30 years old.

3
Executive Branch
  • Once Congress makes laws, the executive branch
    must carry out these laws.
  • Headed by one person , the President, who serves
    four year terms.
  • President has the power to veto bills passed by
    Congress.
  • President represents the nation in dealing with
other countries and leads the nations military
    forces.
  • Presidents main responsibility would be to make
sure that laws are fully executed.
  • Congress can impeach the President if they are
    not carrying out their duties.

4
Judicial Branch
  • Decides if the laws are working fairly.
  • The courts decide on cases having to do with
national laws, treaties, or the Constitution.
They also decide on cases between states and
    between citizens of different states.
  • President names justices to the Supreme Court,
and the Senate votes on them.
  • Supreme Court justices stay in office for life.
  • There are always nine justices on the Supreme
    Court.

5
How the Branches Work Together
  • No branch has any more power then any other
    branch.
  • Each branch has a way to check, or limit, the
    authority of the other branches.
  • Congress can check the President by overriding
    the Presidents veto.
  • The Supreme Court can check Congress by ruling a
    law unconstitutional.
  • The President can check the Supreme Court by
    choosing justices.
