Chinese Religious Beliefs
  • They believed that heaven was the home to many
    gods spirits.
  • Shan Di was the chief god.
  • If the gods were pleased, they sent good harvests
    victory in war.
  • If the gods were mad, they sent floods famine.

The Duties of the King (Emperor)
  • An important duty of the emperor was to perform
    rituals to please the gods.
  • The emperor was the link between heaven and the
    Earth.
  • To find out the gods will, the emperor consulted
    the spirits of his ancestors.

Remember
  • The Chinese believed that the extended family
    included the living, the dead, and all future
    generations.
  • Ancestors lived in another world and were
    dependent on their descendents for food and
    clothes. Without it they would become ghosts
    their families would suffer.

  • Chinese believed that spirits moved in straight
    lines.
  • They believed that evil spirits came from the
    north.

Roots of Revolution
  • In the 1500s the Portuguese had reached SE Asia
    and hoped to expand their trade network into
    China.
  • The Ming Dynasty placed strict limits on foreign
    traders.
  • Cargo was only allowed to be unloaded at specific
    ports and sold to ONLY certain Chinese
    merchants.
  • The Qing Dynasty continued the policy of the Ming.

In the 1700s
  • 1.) Qing Dynasty entered a long period of decline
  • -High taxes limited land made the increasing
    peasants population faced food shortages.
  • -When floods drought caused famine, peasant
    revolts broke out.

  • 2.) Industrial Revolution in Western Europe
  • -increased the military power of W.European
    nations
  • -modern naval fleets put nations like Britain in
    the position to use military strength to demand
    expanded trading rights in China.

European Imperialism
  • Europeans refused to Kowtow (bow low) to the
    Chinese emperor. They demanded the right to
    trade at other Chinese ports.
  • When diplomacy failed the British
  • 1.) Began to sell Opium grown in India to
    China. Other European nations entered the opium
    trade too.

  • 2.) By the 1800s many Chinese were addicted to
    the drug. Most of Chinas silver was gone
    because it was used to pay for the Opium.
  • 3.) The Chinese govt tried to stop the illegal
    drug trade. Users and smugglers faced the death
    penalty.
  • 4.) In 1839 the Chinese destroyed a British
    shipment of Opium war broke out.
  • 5.) The British crushed the Chinese.

Treaty of Nanjing
  • The emperor agreed to pay for the Opium that had
    been destroyed.
  • He gave Britain the island of Hong Kong opened
    other ports to British trade.
