Introduction
  • Our group is learning about Colonial American
    Merchants.

What Houses Were Made Of
  • Wealthy people like merchants built homes out of
    stone, brick, or wood.
  • To get their building supplies they shipped them
    from England or other countries.

5
Merchants Were Traders
  • They traded blankets, rugs, bearskin, broadcloth,
womens petticoats, caps, mens and womens
gloves, tablecloths, shoe buckles, silk laces,
handkerchiefs, buttons, pots, steel, wood, china,
cut glass, silver, butter, eggs, vegetables,
    dishes, cotton, clothes, coffee, sugar,
    spices,and tools.
  • They also traded sun dried foods, lemons, olive
    oil, anchovies, and Jamaican Spirit.

6
Where Merchants Sold Their Goods
  • Merchants sold their goods at a marketplace, or
    at a trading post.
  • They would sell their goods in the town square
because it was the busiest place.

7
What They Ate and Drank
  • Merchants ate the food that they traded with
    other people in town.
  • They drank coffee and ale.

8
Other Jobs
  • Merchants had different jobs in the wintertime.
  • They would be GunSmiths, BlackSmiths, or
    Coopers.
  • These are facts about their other jobs.

BlackSmith
  • Blacksmiths made tools for farmers.
  • To make tools they heated the metal until it was
    yellow and soft.
  • Then they pounded and shaped the metal with a
hammer and let it cool and harden.

10
GunSmith
  • The GunSmith gets some wood he carves the wood
in the shape of a handle on a gun.
  • You have to be at least 14 years old to be a gun
    smith.

Cooper
  • Coopering requires a lot of skill.
  • Coopering crafted casks which held flour,
gunpowder, tobacco, milk, and also wine.
  • Many Colonial Coopers worked on plantations to
produce barrels to ship as many hogs heads as
    possible to other places.
