Child Art Day 2004
  • Begun in 2001 with Art 401 students teaching
    about six different renowned artists
  • Created to thanking children and grandchildren of
    patrons, faculty and staff of CSUB
  • Each child selects three of six workshops based
    upon artists and enjoys a family barbecue and
    culminating exhibit at the end of the day

You Got to Have Friends
  • Featured Van Goghs Sunflower paintings
  • Van Gogh painted brilliant sunflowers emphasizing
    the color yellow as a tribute to his friend
    Gauguin
  • Children created a textured oil pastel painting
    of sunflowers as a tribute to a friend

Queen and King for a Day
  • Children were introduced to the The Old King by
    Ruoault
  • The painting depicts Ruoualts vision of the
    weight of the worlds problems on an imaginary
    kings shoulders
  • Rouault was a former stained glass artist who
    incorporated a stained glass look in his
    paintings
  • Children created a stained glass painting on
    plexi glass of either a queen or king

Painting on Cloud Nine
  • This workshop featured the wine bottle paintings
    of Rene Magritte
  • Magritte liked the shape of a wine bottle as a
    canvas
  • He also was fascinated with using clouds and
    silhouettes as part of his bottle series
  • Children painted daytime landscapes with cloudy
    skies for this workshop

Beam me up Ed!
  • Ed Ruscha was inspired by the early Religious
    paintings that had a beam of light showing in the
    background
  • Ruscha worked as a commercial artist early in his
    career
  • He combined the idea of light, using his own
    pigments for paints, and graphic arts as the
    inspiration for his work
  • His work often involved using one word as the
    focus
  • Children created a picture focusing on one word
    and using graphic markers to create it

Printing from the Past
  • Artist Kathe Kollwitz was inspired by tragedies
    she witnessed from both World Wars I and II
  • First hand she saw mothers protecting children
    from the dangers of war
  • She used printing mostly in black and white as
    her medium
  • Children created a print of mother animals
    protecting their young from danger

Party Animals
  • Artist Marc Chagall painted fantasy animals
    dressed as humans
  • Chagall also painted The Birthday which
    depicted his beloved surprising him on his
    birthday
  • Children created a party animal celebrating a
    birthday showing friends, games and food
