2Panchapakesan Ramanarayanan (Ram)had his initial
lessons in Carnatic vocal music from Smt Vatsala
Sampath and later from Valliyur Shri R.
Gurumurthy. Subsequently, Ram came under the
tutelage of Lalgudi Shri G. Jayaraman. He moved
to Columbus, Ohio in 1996 and to the San
Francisco bay area in 1998. He has been very
fortunate to have had a very supportive cultural
community in both these places that has helped
him develop his talent. While in the bay area,
Ram has learnt from Shri Lalgudi Krishnan, Smt
Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi and Smt. Suguna
Purushottaman during their visits to the bay area
and from Shri Lalgudi Jayaraman's students Shri
Srikanth Chary, Smt. Hamsa Raghuvir, and Smt
Vidya Subramanian. He has also received guidance
from Hemmige Shri V. Srivatsan. He currently
learns from Shri T.N. Bala. Ram works at Intel
Corporation in Santa Clara, California as a
materials engineer. Shivkumar Kalyanaraman has
been trained in violin by Sri PeriSreeramamurthy
(a top violinist in Hyderabad) and Smt T. Rukmini
(Chennai). He has also been mentored by vocalists
(late) Shri M N Subramanium of the Semmangudi
school and Shri BRC Iyengaar of the Ariyakudi
school. He has performed several concerts in USA,
accompanyingvisiting artistes like Chitraveena
Ravikiran, Prof. T.V. Gopalakrishnan, Prof. T. R.
Subramanium, P.N. Krishnamurthy, Ashok Ramani and
Vidya Subramanian (no longer a visiting
artiste!). He is a professorat RPI in
Electrical, Computer and Systems Engineering
(ECSE) Department. He is also the author of a
well known web site on carnaticmusic with free,
downloadable online audio classes that can play
on your iPod or MP3 players. Ravi Shankar
started his laya journey when he was about 6 when
he came under the tutelage of Kumbakonam Sri
Rajappa Iyer. Had his advanced training under the
famous Mannanagudi Sri A. Easwaran in 1989 and is
continuing to learn from him. Ravi has
accompanied accomplished professionals from India
like Dr. N Ramani, O.S. Sudha etc He has also
accompanied artists in the US like Sri. Raghavan
Manian (Disciple of Dr. Balamurali Krishna),
Priya Krishnamoorthy (Disciple of Lalgudi
Jayaraman) to name a few. He is one of the most
sought after mrudangam artists and teacher in the
Chicago area and has played concerts in Chicago,
Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Madison, Peoria, St.
Louis, Salt Lake City and Albany. Directions
to Mothers Hall Come on Route 7 East and in Troy
it becomes Hoosick Street. Watch for signs of RPI
and turn right into 15th Street. Pass a few
lights and you will see the RPI Student Union at
the intersection of 15th Street and Sage Street,
(There is a light at this intersection).
Mothers is located in the Student Union in the
basement. You can park anywhere during weekends.
