• Result- left Europe in hatred, extreme
  nationalism and economic depression

Causes of World War I

• Aggressive nationalism- a feeling of loyalty for
  ones own nation and its people
  
• Germany, France, Britain, Italy, Austria-Hungary,
  and Russia all trying to become the strongest
  nation in Europe
  
• Germany and Britain leading the pack

Imperialism

• European nations competing over colonies around
  the world especially in Africa and Asia
  
• Imperialism- the policy of extending one nations
  rule over many lands

Militarism

• Militarism- the glorification of armed strength
• Nations expanding their armies, navies and some
  have peacetime conscription
  
• Navy-Britain 1 Germany 2
• Army- Germany 1 France 2
• Military leaders were influencing civilian
  governments

Alliance System

• 1879- Dual Alliance- Germany and Austria-Hungary
• 1882- Triple Alliance- Germany, A/H, and Italy
• 1887- Russo-German Treaty
• Bismarck made all these alliances to isolate
  France
  
• Problem- A/H and Russia did not like each other
  and were both allied to Germany
  
• 1888- Russo-German Treaty dissolved

• 1904- Anglo-Franco Treaty
• 1907- Triple Entente- Britain, France and Russia

The Balkans

• Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro, Romania,
  and Serbia had all got their independence from
  the Ottoman Empire during the 19th century
  
• Serbia- wanted to unite all Slavic people in the
  Balkan peninsula into one country
  
• Serbia- threatened A/H areas that were Slavic
  such as Bosnia and Herzegovina that it had tried
  to annex in 1908
  
• Russia- encouraged Serbias attempt to annex
  Bosnia
