US Foreign Affairs
2
French Revolution
  • The French Revolution broke out in 1789 and the
US had to decide who to support, France or
    Britain.
  • Why did we need to help either side?
  • Republicans supported France and the Federalists
    supported Britain.
  • April 22, 1793, President Washington announced
    the US would remain neutral.

3
Pinckney Treaty Jays Treaty
  • Signed in 1795 between the US and Spain.
  • Stated that the US would gain all land east of
the Mississippi R. except Florida and rights to
    travel the Mississippi.
  • Signed 1794 between the US and Britain.
  • Stated that Britain would evacuate forts in the
    Northwest US.
  • Kept Britain from facing war against France and
    US at once.

4
Battle of Fallen Timbers
  • Ended Native American resistance in Ohio.
  • General Mad Anthony Wayne defeated the Miami
    Confederacy on August 20, 1794.
  • Following their defeat, the Native Americans
signed treaties to give up most of their land in
    Ohio.

5
Election of 1796
  • John Adams (Federalist) became president while
    Thomas Jefferson (Republican) became vice.
  • At this time, the Constitution stated that the
runner up in the election would be vice.
  • Why was this a problem?
  • How is it today?

6
XYZ Affair
  • Shortly after entering office, Adams faced war
with France because they saw Jays Treaty as a
    violation of their alliance.
  • Adams sent US officials to France to meet with
French official Talleyrand. They were told to
pay 250,000 to see him by 3 low ranking
    officials.
  • Led to a 2-year undeclared naval war.

7
Nullification
  • XYZ Affair led to anti-French sentiment.
  • Government passed Alien and Sedition Acts, which
    raised citizenship requirements and set
    fines/jail terms anti-US opinions.
  • Kentucky and Virginia began use of nullification
    to protest these acts.
  • What does it mean to nullify?
  • Why might they not like the Acts?
