the Caribbean Islands, Europe, and Asia. The
diverse Bonita Middle staff also includes several
    multilingual teachers and support personnel.
Recognizing the ethnic and cultural differences
among their students, Bonita Middle teachers are
more sensitive to the need for differentiated
learning strategies. The excellent ESOL program
assists monolingual students who are acquiring
English, but all of our teachers are dedicated to
using a variety of learning strategies to fully
engage all students in the curriculum. Being
able to integrate the varied student backgrounds
and perspectives in the classroom provides a
challenge for teachers and a much richer learning
    experience for students.

environments that are geared to the academic and
social needs of the individual student. Great

are in need of improvement. The life skills

an array of critical independent-living skills.

needs of students with varying exceptionalities.

modifications and accommodations to enable them
to be successful with their grade-level

Knowledge
Whether engaged in acquiring facts through the
study of adopted textbooks, the use of research
techniques, or experiential/observational
learning, Bonita Middle teachers and staff
encourage students to seek knowledge that will
prepare them for success in high school and
life-long learning. By offering a progressive
skill-based academic curriculum, augmented with a
variety of exploratory courses, Bonita Middle
strives to prepare students to select a high
school major course of study that best suits
their individual needs. The inclusion of a
career education course which requires students
to explore their strengths and begin working on a
four year high school plan aids in this process.
In addition, making students aware of high school
career academies and specialized programs such as
those offered at the Center For the Arts and the
I.B. Program, helps them see the relevance of the
knowledge they are acquiring in middle school and
gives them a more solid foundation on which to
build their future.

Transition
  • Transition Incoming 6th graders are
beginning a new phase in their lives.

Transition The administrators, teachers and
support staff make every effort to ease the
transition of sixth graders into middle school.
During the spring, a sixth grade teacher and
counselor visit the fifth grade classrooms of our
feeder schools to explain the classes and
activities available at Bonita Middle. Their
mission is not only to inform students and answer
their many questions, but also to make them feel
more comfortable about the transition and get
them excited about entering middle school.
Bonita Middle also invites all incoming sixth
graders to participate in the Early Stallions
Program, which is a week-long summer orientation
to the school. This allows the new students to
become acquainted with each other, to meet some
teachers and staff, and to familiarize themselves
with the building. This really helps ease their
stress and apprehension on the first day of
school. In addition, all of our sixth grade
teachers are sensitive to the needs of their
students and provide an accepting, nurturing
atmosphere and motivational curricular activities
to insure that their students have a positive
middle school experience from the start.
22
United Community Support
Our school enjoys much success with many
organizations within the community.
23
Visual Arts
Visual Arts Department at Bonita Springs Middle
School is dedicated to the belief that the arts
and life are an inseparable aspect of your
students lives, and is an essential and
universal language. The visual arts should be a
vehicle for continuous intellectual and creative
development throughout your students school
life. They are essential to providing
educational balance as well as teaching or
fostering divergent and creative solutions to
design problems. The ability to think and
express oneself visually is a universal need that
is fostered by the Bonita Springs art teachers by
introducing students to a variety of media and
techniques. We stress increased skills in
communication, production of quality work,
connecting with and using creativity and design.
The visual arts at BSMS provide an essential
component for a strong knowledge base for future
problem solving, yet providing a fun and caring
environment for our middle school students.
