Preterite vs Imperfect
  • When talking about the past, an action in
    progress can often be interrupted by some event.
    In that situation the imperfect expresses the
    action in progress and the preterite expresses
    the interrupting event.
  • Regresábamos a casa cuando empezó a llover
  • We were returning home when it began to rain

  • The impefect also describes the conditions
    surrounding a particular event the way things
    were, what was going on, and the way people felt.
  • Hacía frío y había niebla cuando el accidente

  • It was cold and it was foggy when the accident
    occurred

  • When telling a story, use both the preterite and
    imperfect tenses
  • Use the imperfect tense to set the scene by

    places, moods, and situations
