Teenage Obesity Facts
  • 25 of U.S. children are overweight or at risk
    for becoming obese
  • Obesity is both a physical and psychological
    illness.
  • It is usually a family illness.
  • Obesity is an epidemic, worse than the smoking
    problem.
  • Experts blame the rise in obesity on unhealthy
    food choices and increasingly sedentary
    lifestyles.
  • Studies show that students eat less breakfast,
    fruits, vegetables and milk as they go from
    elementary to middle school. Pop consumption
    tripled, as healthier alternatives, such as milk
    and fruit juice decrease.

Improve or Maintain?
  • Crunches My fitness test scores were good in
    this area. I plan to continue doing crunches in
    PE and at home to maintain my current abdominal
    strength.
  • Shuttle Run My fitness test scores were low, so
    I need to practice running fast short distances
    to improve.
  • Sit-n-Reach My test scores are good, so I plan
    to continue stretching before and after tap class
    to maintain.
  • Mile Run My mile time was surprisingly good. I
    hope to maintain my time.
  • Push-Ups My test scores are good, so I just
    need to continue doing push ups in dance class
    and when I get in trouble at home to maintain.

Heart Rate Watch Averages
  • Four out of the five times we used the watches
    during exercise, I was in or above my target
    heart rate zone except the day that we did tae
    bo. I didnt work hard enough on that day. It was
    boring. I did better on the run and jump rope
    days.

Pedometer Measurements
  • Reflection One day I got over 10,000 steps
    because I wore the pedometer all day and at tap
    class. The other days I did not meet the 10,000
    step challenge. Maybe if I walked to school I
    could get 10,000 steps.

Reflection My body fat content is good. I will
just try to maintain.

Reflection I think my daily activities are
good, but many of them do not involve exercise.
So if you are looking for daily exercise, Im not
getting enough. I tap one day a week and I only
snowboard on the weekends when there is enough
snow.

Fitness Plan Reflection
  • Reflection In doing this project I learned how
    to use the pedometer, the heart rate monitors,
    and the body fat analyzer. I have also learned
    how to calculate my calorie intake needs. All of
    these things made me think about exercise more
    than I wanted to. I dont really like exercise
    and I hate most sports, especially if they
    involve a ball. I do want to stay the size I am.
    I was really happy to find out that my body fat
    is low. I dont want to get fat. I hope to stay
    fit by staying active in tap dance, acting and
    snowboarding. I also walk a lot, even if it is
    just to my friends houses and at the mall. This
    project wasnt as bad as I thought it would be.
    It did help me think of ways to stay fit without
    having to go running.
