  • The program consisted of 2 parts
  • Weight Loss and Fitness Challenge
  • Teams competed to lose the largest percent of
    weight
  • Westlake Family Cookbook
  • Employees were asked to share healthy recipes to
    be published in the company cookbook that was
    distributed to all employees

Program Overview
  • Employees competed over a 4 month period to lose
    the largest percent of weight
  • Employees were given 1 point for every minute of
    physical activity
  • The top 3 teams with the largest percent of
    weight loss won a prize
  • Activity points were only used in the case of a
    tie

Program Requirements
  • Employees were required to form a team of 3 to 5
    co-workers
  • Employees had to designate a team captain to
    report the teams progress
  • Decide on a team name
  • Set a weight loss goal of 10lbs per member
    (minimum)
  • Complete and sign the team registration form

Program Kick-Off
  • All employees were sent a Kick-off Packet that
    included Program Overview, Contest Rules,
    Healthy Eating Guide, Team Captain
    Responsibilities, Team Registration Form, and a
    Pedometer
  • Team captains submitted their team registration
    form with the team name, names of all members,
    and total team starting weight
  • All employees were asked to vote on the most
    creative team name. The team with the most votes
    won a prize.

Administration
  • Each week employees reported the number of pounds
    lost and activity points to the team captain
  • The team captain then reported as a team the
    number of pounds lost and activity points to the
    local HR Representative
  • The local HR Representative reported all of the
    information for the teams at their worksite to
    the Benefits Department
  • The Benefits Department sent out weekly updates
    to all employees via email, intranet, and
    bulletin board postings

Prizes
  • The team with the most creative name won a
    t-shirt with their name on it
  • All participants received a monogrammed lunch kit
    and water bottle
  • 1st prize Apple Ipod shuffle and headset, a
    heart rate monitor, and a blood pressure kit
  • 2nd prize George Foreman Grill and heart
    monitor
  • 3rd prize Smoothie Machine and blood pressure
    kit
  • We recognized that all employees could not
    participate due to personal and/or health reasons
    so all employees were entered into a drawing to
    win the following prizes
  • A set of golf clubs
  • Stationary exercise bike
  • Digital camera

The Results
  • 93 Teams with 413 employees participated in the
    program
  • 20 of our employee population
  • Each team lost an average of 42 pounds
  • Teams lost a total of 3,949 pounds (almost 2
    tons)
  • Teams lost 4.5 of their total starting weight
  • Teams accumulated 1,054,528 activity points
  • 10 teams exceeded their weight lost goal
  • 9 teams lost within 10 lbs of their weight loss
    goal

Westlake Family Cookbook
  • Employees were asked to submit healthy recipes to
    be published in the Westlake Family Cookbook
  • Employees could submit their recipes via the
    internet or by completing a recipe collection
    worksheet
  • The employees name and work location was printed
    next to the recipe they submitted
  • All employees received a copy of the Westlake
    Family Cookbook

Our Success
  • Increased employee engagement in the wellness
    program through competition
  • Increased employee awareness about healthy eating
    habits, the importance of healthy weight loss and
    physical activity
  • Provided employees with an incentive to make
    lifestyle changes
  • Increased employee moral and camaraderie
  • Increased excitement and anticipation about the
    wellness program and upcoming initiatives
  • Change in habits Some worksites began
    furnishing fruit, juice, yogurt rather than
    donuts, coffee, and soft drinks at safety and
    other employee meetings

Areas For Improvement
  • Increase employee participation and include
    family participation
  • Integrate activity points into the competition
    and reward teams with the most activity points
  • Provide monthly incentives to keep momentum
    throughout the challenge
  • Follow up to determine if weight loss was
    maintained
  • Simplify communication
