Four philosophies have had profound influence on
both education and religion.
  • IDEALISM For the Idealist, the world of the
mind, ideas, and reason is primary. Values are
absolute, no change from generation to
generation. Were not created by man, part of the
    universe. Plato.
  • NATURALISM An aggregate of things existing
outside of our minds. Order in nature that can
be depended upon. Let nature take its course.
    Roseau.

  • Realism For the realist, the universe exists
whether the human mind perceives it or not. The
world of things is surperior to the world of
ideas. No hard, fast set of rules. Aristotle.
  • Pragmatism Accepts no truth as absolute.
Pragmatism advocates the idea that truth is
    determined by function or consequence.
Pragmatists think in terms of tentative truth
that serves until some experience evolves a new
tentative truth. Knowledge is arrived at by
    scientific inquiry, testing, questioning, and
retesting, and is never concluded. John Dewey.
