Title: Bell Ringer

1
Bell Ringer
  • Identify UCS, UCR, NS, CS, and CR in the
    following (true) story.
  • When Watson began his study, "Little Albert" was
11 months old. He was described as a remarkably
calm infant who rarely displayed fear of
anything. He was not afraid of animals, including
the white laboratory rat, but he was afraid of
    loud noises.
  • Watson decided to use his natural fear response
to loud noises. Watson created a loud noise by
striking a large steel pipe with a hammer, just
behind Albert's head, whenever he saw the lab
    rat.
  • After only seven paired presentations of the rat
and the loud noise, he began to cry and try to
crawl away as soon as he saw the rat, even though
the rat was not paired with the loud noise on
this occasion. Albert had not displayed fear of
any of these objects prior to the pairing of the
loud noise with the presentation of the rat.

2
Classical Conditioning
  • Unconditional stimuli and responses is all about
reflexes and automatic reactions (ie not
    thinking about consequences).
  • A conditional response is a learned reaction.

3
Classical Conditioning
  • A college guy spends a summer going down by the
football field every day wearing a black and
white striped shirt, scattering birdseed all over
the field, blowing a whistle, then walking off.
Fall arrives, and the schools first home game
starts. The referee walks out and blows his
whistleand the game has to be delayed half an
hour waiting for the birds to get off the field.

4
Classical Conditioning
  • A child waits for her parents to come home. She
hears the sound of a car pull in to her driveway,
and then she sees her parents walk in the door
and gets excited. Eventually, she learns to get
excited when she hears their car.

5
Classical Conditioning
  • Jamie was talked into riding a roller coaster
when she was 12. The ride absolutely terrified
her. Now whenever she goes to the amusement park,
she breaks into a cold sweat if she even looks at
    the roller coaster.

6
Classical Conditioning
  • George was frightened when a barking spaniel
lunged at the fence as George walked by. The next
day, when Georges mother started to lead him by
the house where the spaniel lives, George began
    to tremble.

7
Classical Conditioning
  • Annas friend loved to take pictures, but his
camera had a really strong flash. Now shes
developed a habit of blinking whenever he raises
    the camera.

8
DIY Classical Conditioning(30 points)
  • Working individually, create six of your own
    examples of classical conditioning scenarios.
  • Should be 2-3 sentences.
  • Identify the UCS, UCR, NS, CS, and CR.
