Title: Slow but steady economic growth in Cambodia

1
Slow but steady economic growth in Cambodia
  • Although there have been impressive gains in some
sectors, in particular textiles, Cambodia is
still struggling to achieve higher levels of
economic growth as well as equitable
distribution. By some estimates, nearly 40 of
the population still live in poverty. With
approximately 85 of the population living in
rural areas, many people start small stores in
their villages to make a living.

  • In this village just outside Sihanoukville, many
people either work in the rock quarry or in one
of the many textile factories that have sprung up
over the past few years. The opportunities for
    work are limited.

  • The ILO is working with the Government to help
    promote better communication between management
and workers. Research has shown that dialogue is
essential to increasing efficiency and improving
production methods. The manager of this factory
checks productivity rates at each station to
    assess progress.

  • Higher education is often out of reach for
families with modest incomes or that are mired in
poverty. The provision of vocational training in
marketable skills has had a positive impact on
    many people's economic livelihoods.In
collaboration with the Employers and Workers
organisations, the ILO has assisted in the
elimination of child labour from the textile
    sector.

Slow but steady economic growth in Cambodia
  • The growth of the textile industry has been a
driving force in the improvement of economic
conditions in parts of Cambodia. The jobs
provided by these new factories have given the
many new entrants to the job market an
opportunity to earn a living and provide for
    their families.

Slow but steady economic growth in Cambodia
  • Cambodia, like many other countries in the
Asia-Pacific region, is developing a solid
foundation for future growth. The rapid pace of
change in a globalised economy will present many
    challenges and opportunities. Diversification
and improvement of other sectors, like tourism
and services, can help countries experience a
sustained period of economic and social progress.
