2Computer Connections - Lesson 1 Outer Hardware
1. The TOWER case or DESKTOP case houses all of
the important computer components. It has places
or drives to insert floppy DISKS or CDs. 2.
What does CD-ROM mean? COMPACT DISK READ ONLY
MEMORY 3. The two most common ways to input
information into the computer are the KEYBOARD
and the MOUSE. A SCANNER is another type of
input device that allows you to put images into
the computer. You can also input photographs
into a computer with a DIGITAL CAMERA. 4.
OUTPUT devices display information in a way that
you can you can understand. The most common
output device is a MONITOR, which looks a lot
like a TV. SPEAKERS are output devices that
allow you to hear sound. Computers are also
connected to PRINTERS, which prints the
information you see on a computer screen.
3Computer Connections - Lesson 2 Hardware on the
Inside
- Computers are made of many electronic COMPONENTS
or parts. Each one has a special JOB and they
work together to make your computer operate. - Match each component its best description.
- C Power Supply
- G Motherboard
- F Sound Card
- E Video Card
- D Modem
- B CPU
- A BIOS
- A chip that wakes up the computer when you turn
it on and reminds it what parts it has and what
they do. - Acts as the brain of a computer by controlling
information and telling other parts of the
computer what to do. - Converts electricity from your house to a current
that works for your computer. - Expansion card that allows computers to talk to
each other. - Handles graphics that are displayed on the
monitor. - Special circuits for operating the computers
sound. - The largest circuit board that holds all of the
most important parts of the computer and has many
smaller boards plugged into it.

7. RAM stands for RANDOM ACCESS MEMORY. It is
made of chips that will remember what you tell
them and can even change to remember new
information, but forgets everything you told it
when the computer is SHUT DOWN. ROM stands for
READ ONLY MEMORY. and is good at remembering, but
cannot change it's mind. It holds INFORMATION
that is built into it. 8. PORTS are the places
on the outside of the computer case where you
plug in hardware and are connected to expansion
cards on the inside of your computer. They are
controlled by their expansion cards which are
plugged into the MOTHERBOARD and are connected to
other components by CABLES, which are long, flat
bands that contain electrical WIRES. 9. The
three most common disk drives are the HARD DRIVE,
FLOPPY DISK, drive and CD-ROM.
