• A strong humanist

• Born October 27, 1466 in Holland
• Raised as a Roman Catholic
• Parents died from the Plague
• Received the best education a young person could
  get
• Ordained into the churchs priesthood

Education

• Studied at the University of Paris
• Here he was influenced by humanism
• He liked to study independently
• After mastering the Latin language Erasmus began
  literature

Inspiration

• He did not like the Catholic Churchs teachings
• He wanted to improve it
• Martin Luther also inspired him because they both
  were against the church and wanted to adjust it

Greek New Testament
The Greek New Testament

• 1515 Erasmus began a project
• 1516 He published the first published Greek New
  Testament
• the Comma Johanneum was the small passage not
  included (1 John 578)

Greek New Testament continued

• The Greek New Testament helped other publications
  of different versions
• Erasmus made this for Christianity, so he
  dedicated his work to Pope Leo X
• Soon after, he began a new project
• The publication of his Paraphrases of the New
  Testament

• A humanist is, A person having a strong interest
  in or concern for human welfare, values, and
  dignity.
• Many of his books were based off of his humanist
  ideas
• To help the people, he tried to reveal the truth
  about the Catholic Church

Heresy

• Erasmus writings posed a threat to the Catholic
  Church
• Many Catholics considered Erasmus to be a heretic
  because his writings spoke against the Catholic
  Church
• However, the church never actually denounced
  Erasmus a heretic

• Created new Latin and Greek editions of the New
  Testament
• Applied sense in to human affairs
• Exposed the Catholic Church
