Title: Plastics
1Plastics
- Lesson objective to be able to identify common
plastics
2What are plastics made from
- Are plastics a new or old material area?
- What are they made from are they made from the
following? - Amber the mineral
- Rubber
- Latex
- Tree resins
- Coal
- Gas
- Oils

3Natural plastics are
Rubber is a natural occurring polymer.
The problems associated with plastics - For years
we've filled our landfills with plastics and
storage containers that will, in essence, sit and
not rot. The scientific word for "rotting" is
biodegradation, the process by which organic
materials are broken down by other living things.
Name one positive move that supermarkets and
chains stores have done to reduce the use of
plastics
These applesauce cups are made out of cornstarch,
which means they can biodegrade in soil, compost
or waste-treatment facilities within a few
months.

4Thermoplastics
The term thermoplastic indicates that these
materials melt on heating and may be processed
by a variety of moulding and extrusion
techniques. It also has a memory so can be
reheated and moulded again

plastics
5Thermosetting plastics
Alternately, thermosetting polymers can not be
melted or remelted.

6The super-material known as Kevlar is a man-made
polymer. Kevlar is used in bullet-proof vests,
strong/lightweight frames, and underwater cables
that are 20 times stronger than steel.
7- Different types of methods used to produce
plastic products - Task 1 write down two of these methods and
learn about them, research on the Internet or use
the AQA theory books, draw diagrams and label
them - Plastic Injection Moulds and Plastic Injection

12Making GRP involves combining a thermoplastic,
such as polyester, with fibres of glass.

Task 2 design a piece of kitchen breakfast
equipment and describe the type of moulding
method you would use. Think about what machines
we have in the DT room
