While under British colonial rule Kenya's
official anthem was "God Save the Queen" which is
the British Anthem. "Kenya Land of the Lion" was
the national song sung at sporting and other such
events. No mention of Kenyans or their culture
was allowed.
4Kenya Colonial History
- The colonial history of Kenya starts at the
Berlin Conference of 1885 when European nations
divided Africa among themselves. In 1894 the
British government declared the East African
Protectorate over Kenya and Uganda. - The protectorate became a colony in 1920. The

- 1944 Kenyan African Union (KAU) formed to
campaign for independence. - 1947 Jomo Kenyatta becomes KAU leader.
- 1947 The Mau Mau rebel movement is born
- 1952 Mau Mau activities intensify. Colonial
government declares state of emergency. Kenyatta,
Achieng Aneko and others are arrested. - 1953 Kenyatta is sentenced to 7 years
imprisonment on charges of leading Mau mau. .

- 1959 Kenyatta is released from prison.
- 1960 State of emergency ends. Britain starts
preparing Kenya for majority African rule. James
Gichuru, Oginga Odinga and others form Kenya
African National Union (KANU) - 1963 June 1st Kenya achieves internal
self-government (Madaraka). - 1963 December 12th Kenya gains independence.

7History and Meaning of the Flag of Kenya
- The current Kenya flag was adopted on
Independence Day, December 12th 1963. -
- It was based on the flag of KANU (Kenya African
National Union), the political party that led
Kenya to independence. - The original flag of Kenya had three equal
stripes of black, red, and green. These colors
symbolized

- Black - The indigenous Kenyan people
- Red - The blood that was shed in the fight for
independence - Green - Kenya's rich agricultural land and
natural resources - The white stripes, the traditional Masai shield,
and the two crossed spears were added to the flag
of Kenya after Kenya attained independence. The
white color symbolizes peace while the shield and
spears signifies that all Kenyans are always
ready to defend the independence they fought so
hard for.

- The Kenya national anthem is a beautiful piece of
music with an authentic African melody. - The anthem evokes a deep sense of patriotism
among Kenyans. - It is commonly played during international events
such as the international athletic events when
Kenyan athletes excel. - Back in the country the national anthem is played
during national holidays and on other important
or historical events. - During these events a military band performs the
national anthem asserting the anthem's role as a
symbol of Kenya's national unity.

- New government cabinet is formed
- New Kenyan Flag and new Kenyan National Anthem
are adopted and symbolizes the following
12Mzee Daniel Arap Moi1978-1992
- Multiparty Democracy is born
- In 1992 parliament revoked the section of the
Constitution that made Kenya a one party state. - In December 1992 Kenya held its first multiparty
elections. Kenya's President Moi won the
elections to start his first five-year term under
the new constitutional amendments. - In the second multiparty elections in December
1997 Moi won a second and final five-year term.
13President Mwai Kibaki2002 ?
- In 2002 the main opposition parties united under
one coalition, NARC. - The NARC candidate Mwai Kibaki defeated Uhuru
Kenyatta of KANU thus ending KANU's thirty-nine
year reign. - The NARC government has dramatically reversed the
negative economic growth and hardship once
experienced in Kenya during President Moi's
tenure.
