Course Overview
  • Prerequisite Psyc103 Introduction to
    Psychological Science
  • This course will give you a general understanding
    of the following
  • Theories (current and historical) that underlie
    the study of human development
  • Research methodologies applied to the study of
    human development
  • More specifically, students will gain knowledge
    in the following areas
  • Fundamental changes in development biosocial,
    cognitive, and psychosocial development
  • Biosocial development body and brain changes,
    abnormal development, aging
  • Cognitive development language, thought, higher
    cognition
  • Psychosocial development emotions, gender,
    identity, morality, and sexuality
  • Importance of relationships families, friends,
    and romantic partners
  • Different contexts of development culture,
    school, work, and leisure
  • Psychosocial problems that confront children,
    adolescents, and adults

Attendance / Course participation (50 pts)
  • Attendance and participation are mandatory!
  • Learning is not a spectator sport!
  • You will receive up to 20 points for your general
    attendance and participation.
  • In addition, you will receive up to 10 points for
    participation in each of three in-class debate
    (see schedule).

Journal Assignments (280 points)
  • You will turn in four journal assignments (up to
    70 points each) throughout the course of the
    semester. Each assignment will encompass two
    developmental periods from the text
  • Journal 1 Part I the beginning Part II the
    1st two years due 2/5Journal 2 Part III the
    play years Part IV the school years due
    3/12Journal 3 Part V adolescence Part VI
    emerging adulthood due 4/7Journal 4 Part VII

  • Each journal assignment will include the
    following
  • 1) 1 hour scientific observation of someone from
    within at least one of the developmental periods
  • 2) 1 page answers to 2 of 3 critical thinking
    questions (provided by me)
  • 3) short personal essay discussing the
    significance of each developmental period in your
    own life

Research Proposal (100 points)
  • You will be required to develop an APA formatted
    research proposal which will briefly (7-10 pages)
    articulate the following
  • A research (developmental) question that you
    would like to research
  • Why we should consider it to be worth researching
  • Why we dont already have a good enough answer to
    the question
  • you will do a bit of a literature review
    including reference to 3-5 relevant empirical
    articles
  • How you intend to research it
  • What you expect to find
  • The proposal will be due May 1st.
  • More information about the research proposal will
    be given as the semester progresses.

Exams (500 points)
  • There will be four exams over the course of the
    semester
  • four regular exams (worth 100 points each)
  • one comprehensive final (worth 100 points).
  • Note the fourth regular exam and the final will
    be given together.
  • MC/TF, essay format
  • You will be responsible for information presented
    both in the readings AND in class.

  • Exam Retakes (available only for the first three
    regular exams)
  • Students have the opportunity to earn back points
    for missed questions on one exam by engaging in
    an oral exam retake with me. Details about this
    will be given after the first exam.
  • Make-up Exams
  • Students will have the opportunity to make up one
    missed exam.
  • If the absence was a non-emergency, then
    permission from me must be obtained PRIOR to the
    scheduled exam AND written documentation from the
    appropriate authority (e.g., doctor, coach, etc.)
    must be provided.
  • If the absence was an emergency (e.g., sudden
    severe illness, death in family) then an approved
    absence must be obtained from the Absence Memo
    Office (67 George Street, 953-3390).

extra credit project (max 50 pts)
  • You will have the opportunity to receive extra
    credit points through a volunteer project.
  • You will choose a particular age group and then
    identify an organization that targets this age
    group.
  • You will be expected to volunteer for this
    organization for 5 to 10 hours during the
    semester and to finalize the volunteer experience
    by writing an essay that applies developmental
    concepts/theories learned in class to your
    volunteer experience.
  • Other Extra Credit For those not doing a
    volunteer project, you can receive extra credit
    for taking online chapter quizzes on the
    psycportal by the assigned date. You will receive
    1 point per quiz.
