• The Truman Doctrine- the US will always support
  nations who are trying to defend against
  communism
• Marshall Plan- The US gave free Europe billions
  to rebuild after war.
• The Berlin Airlift made America look like a world
  leader.

The Korean War- 1950

• North Korea (Communist) crossed the 38th Parallel
  into South Korea (Democratic)
• The US quickly sent troops to fight off the
  communists.
• After 3 years of fighting and 54,000 Americans
  killed, an armistice was signed.

Home in the US

• The Hollywood 10 were sent to prison for fear
  of communist ties.
• Ethel and Julius Rosenberg were convicted of
  slipping atomic secrets to the USSR and executed
• Sen. Joseph McCarthy sought out to find
  communists across America

Super Friends and Legion of Doom

• The US and many other countries signed the NATO
  Pact for mutual defense.
• In response, the USSR and seven other countries
  signed the WARSAW Pact

Space Race and U-2

• In 1957, Russia was the first send a satellite

• In 1960, Francis Powers U-2 spy plane was shot
  down over the USSR
• The US was caught in a lie and looked like fools
  as they admitted espionage.
