Aretha Louise Franklin was born on May 25th, 1942

In Memphis, Tennessee

But after she was born her family moved to
Detroit, Michigan.

Her father was a Baptist minister.

Her mother was a gospel singer. She died when
Aretha was young.

Aretha sang and learned about music in the gospel
choir at her fathers church.

She taught herself how to play the piano.

Aretha was only 12 years old when she was made
the featured soloist in her churchs gospel
choir.

Two years later she started recording her own

1960s that people began calling her The Queen
of Soul
