3EVACUATION PLAN
- PURPOSE
- To facilitate and organize a plan that provides a
guide during a fire and other emergencies. - Education and training are provided so that all
employees know and understand the Emergency
Action Plan. - LOCATION OF PLAN
- A copy will be maintained on the URI website.
4WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
- EVACUATION PLAN Be familiar with the emergency
evacuation plan for the Shepard building. -
5ESCAPE PROCEDURES AND EXIT ROUTES
- Diagrams of the various exit routes are posted on
the wall by the exit door on each floor leading
to the hallway. - EXITS Know the location of your two closest
exits, and be familiar with the path that leads
to the outside of the building.
6ESCAPE PROCEDURES AND EXIT ROUTES
- The evacuation diagrams are marked with a blue,
red, yellow or green arrow to provide a guide of
the primary secondary route for each area. - Posted on the evacuation diagrams are the primary
and secondary evacuation routes from your
location.

9ESCAPE PROCEDURES AND EXIT ROUTES
- The stairwells are marked with a blue, red,
yellow or green dot to identify the primary route
for each location. - This plan was created to prevent overcrowding in
the stairwells.
10ESCAPE PROCEDURES AND EXIT ROUTES
- Elevators must not be used during fire
emergencies or drills. - If you are in the elevator when the alarm sounds-
the elevator should automatically stop on the
first floor. If not push the emergency call
button in the elevator to alert security.
11NOTIFICATION OF EMERGENCIES AND ALARM SYSTEMS
- In an emergency, notification will be provided by
a Fire Alarm that includes an audible and visual
signal or via the Intercom System. - The Fire Alarm pull stations are located by the
exit doors leading to the stairwells.
12IF YOU DISCOVER A FIRE
- Pull the nearest fire alarm.
- Leave the fire area and close the door to the
area. - If you notice smoke or an obstruction at the
primary escape route, use the alternative escape
route or follow instructions from fire or
security personnel. - NEVER IGNORE A FIRE ALARM OR OTHER EMERGENCY
NOTIFICATIONS.
13EVACUATION OF A SPECIAL NEEDS PERSON
- Upon activation of the fire alarm system, special
needs personnel are to be moved to the stairwell
designated as an Area of Refuge. - Press the button to alert Security or call
277-5155 to notify security of your
location. Security or Fire Personnel will provide
evacuation assistance.

2nd, 3rd 4th Floor Green Evacuation Stairwell
(Southeast Stairwell) is the Area of Refuge for
anyone who needs assistance evacuating the
building.

(Northwest Stairwell) is the Area of Refuge for
anyone who needs assistance evacuating the
building.

16Use caution when exiting through the Red and
Yellow Stairwells which exit into Clemence
Street. This is a two way street !
17WHEN YOU EVACUATE THE BUILDING
- Report to your designated Check-In Location.
- Blue Stairwell- Fulton Street
- Red Stairwell- Mathewson Street (sidewalk).
- Green Stairwell Yellow Stairwell- Lot directly
across building on Westminster Street - Each department head will be responsible for
assigning Accountability Officers. - Once you have arrived at your evacuation Check-In
Location, please report to your designated
Accountability Officer.

21WHEN YOU HAVE EVACUATED THE BUILDING
- If you suspect that someone is missing, injured
or trapped, contact URI Security at 277-5155 or
report to Fire personnel or URI Security. - Anyone injured during an evacuation, report to
Fire personnel or URI Security. - Never re-enter the building for any reason.
- Do not re-enter the building until instructed to
do so by URI Security. - If an emergency exists which requires that
occupants of the Shepard Building remain in cold
or inclement weather, provisions will be made to
utilize a nearby location.
22INFORMATION THAT STAFF, STUDENTS AND FACULTY
SHOULD KNOW BEFORE AN EMERGENCY OCCURS?
- Be familiar with the building emergency
evacuation plan - Know the pathway to at least two alternative
exits from every room/area at the workplace - Recognize the sound/signaling method of the
fire/evacuation alarms - Know who to contact in an emergency and how to
contact them - Know how many desks or cubicles are between your
workstation and two of the nearest exits so you
can escape in the dark if necessary - Know where the fire/evacuation alarms are located
and how to use them - Report damaged or malfunctioning safety systems
to URI Facilities and Operations 277-5030.
