Title: Environmental Quality: Restoring Bronx River.

1
Environmental QualityRestoring Bronx River.
  • By Swapan Bhuiyan

2
Introduction
  • The Bronx River
  • Twisty stream
  • Floodplains, marshland, ravines, beaver and
    salt-water marshes.
  • During 1820s to 1830s
  • Late 1800s
  • Effects of Water Pollution
  • Unbalanced river, disrupt lake ecosystem
  • Poisonous food animals (bio-accumulation of
    toxins)
  • Poisonous drinking water
  • Acid rain ? Deforestation

3
Introduction Contd
  • The Bronx River
  • Railroad (1840s)
  • Industrialization
  • Open Sewer.
  • Three sites (Estuary Section)
  • The Soundview Park
  • Concrete Plant
  • Starlight Park

4
Goals
  • Study quality of water
  • Analyze the newly obtained data
  • Compare it with the previous data
  • Make statistical justifications
  • Draw valid conclusions

Objectives
  • Salinity
  • pH level
  • Dissolved Oxygen level
  • Water temperature
  • Air temperature
  • Nitrate
  • Turbidity
  • Saturation of Oxygen in water

5
Hypothesis
  • The water quality has improved

Procedure
  • Air and Water Temperature
  • Turbidity
  • Salinity
  • Dissolve Oxygen
  • Nitrates
  • pH
  • Saturation of Oxygen

6
Results
Yearly Average pH Dissolve Oxygen Salinity Air Temperature Water Temperature
2003 7.6 7.3 ppm 16 ppt 23.9 ?C 19.6 ?C
2004 7.76 7.84 ppm 18 ppt 20.2 ?C 17.5 ?C
2005 7.76 9.4 ppm 15 ppt 19 ?C 14.7 ?C
  • The pH difference
  • The DO difference and temperature connection
  • Salinity
  • The data for several tests are not shown for
several test we did not conduct those experiments
for the year 2003. This is due to our desire to
    show comparison among the data.

7
Discussion
  • Bronx River is worse from year 2003. No real
changes has occurred in the river.
  • The results indicate that the water of the river
    remains polluted.

8
Cleaning The River
  • Oysters
  • Clean the water
  • How
  • Getting the Oysters
  • Oyster Habitat
  • Lantern Nets
  • What we are doing with this study.
  • The result we expect
  • The license
