Biography

• He was born in Norway some time around 980 A.D.
• His father, Erik the Red sailed from Norway to
  Iceland and then to Greenland.
• His family sailed to Greenland in 985.

Purpose of Journey

• Leif Erikson wanted farm land.
• He got the boat from his dad, Erik the Red.
• He took 35 men with him.

Journey

• Erikson sailed from Greenland to Vinland in long
  ships.
• He sailed west from Greenland in 1002 to find
  land a Norse sea captain Bjarni Herjulfsson had
  seen.
• Leif Erikson and his crew were in a storm and
  were driven ashore.

Settlement

• The Vikings called the people they found
  Skralings.
• The Skralings were friendly.
• The Vikings traded goods for furs with the
  Skralings.
• After a few years the Vikings were forced to
  abandon their settlements when conflict
  developed.

• Leif Erikson found the farm land he was looking
  for.
• Erikson found Vinland which is now part of North
  America.
• He was a famous leader and started a colony.
