Wasps and Bees

Overview
  • Types of wasps and bees
  • Nesting locations
  • Fatality statistics
  • Preventions
  • Conclusion further research

3
WASPS
  • Three common types Paper wasp, Yellow jacket,
    Bald-faced hornet
  • For paper wasps and bald-faced hornets, nests are
constructed out of wood or foliage and are
generally found on the underside of stable
    structures, such as house eaves.
  • Yellow jackets nest in a hole in the ground, the
size of which grows as the population of the
    colony grows.

WASPS
  • The stinger is not barbed, therefore it can sting
    a victim multiple times.

BEES
  • Common types Bumble Bee and Honey Bee
  • Nests are constructed of wax cells and are
usually found in abandoned burrows, underneath or
behind logs, within piles of debris, and even in
the walls of houses or underneath slabs.

BEES
  • Killer Bees, originally from Africa and South
America, has began spreading in North America.
  • Similar in appearance to the Bumble Bee and Honey
Bee, the Killer Bee attacks victims in large
numbers and at a ferocious rate, often resulting
    in death.
  • The nesting locations of the killer bee are
similar to those of the Bumble and Honey Bee.

10
BEES
  • The bee stinger is barbed, usually resulting in
it tearing away from the bees abdomen and staying
    in the victim.
  • Try to brush off the stinger using something
strong and flexible, like a credit card.
  • Be careful not to inject more venom if you remove
    the stinger with tweezers.

BEE ANATOMY

Wasp and Bee Fatalities
  • Very uncommon
  • Deaths result from an extreme allergic reaction
to the venom of wasps and bees.
  • Only about 2 people out of 1,000 are allergic to
this venom, resulting in about 66 deaths per
    year.
  • Treatment includes a dose of epinephrine, a
hormone that dilates blood vessels and reduces
    swelling.

13
Preventions
  • Always inspect a new work area for wasp and bee
    nests.
  • Have a can of wasp and bee spray handy incase you
    find a nest.
  • Never deliberately disturb a nest.
  • Have an epinephrine pen on-site incase of a
severe allergic reaction to a wasp or bee sting.

Conclusion
  • It is the Duty of the General Contractor to
provide a safe working environment for everybody
    on the site!!
