Signifying the beginning of a long-term
engagement with the local communities impacted by
its operations in Indonesia, MEC Holdings today
announced its first year-long Commitment to
Action at the annual meeting of the Clinton
Global Initiative (CGI) in New York City. The
commitment, Holistic Sustainable Development for
East Kutai, is targeted at residents of 15
villages in East Kutai in East Kalimantan,
Indonesia and in its first year intends to
deliver greater access to clean drinking water,
to healthcare through the use of medical clinics,
and to education through bus transportation for
schoolchildren. Holistic Sustainable Development
for East Kutai is the initial phase of a much
larger, long-term program to improve quality of
life and ensure sustainable practices in East
Kutai, where MEC Holdings is constructing one of
Indonesias largest integrated mining, industrial
and infrastructure facilities. The project
includes Indonesias first

private rail line, which will carry raw material
from the companys mine to a seaport on the coast
for easy shipping to growing economies throughout
the region, and is designed to develop resources
in a sustainable, comprehensive manner. Given
the size and expected impact of the project, MEC
Holdings has chosen a proactive approach to
social responsibility initiatives, taking action
to give back to local communities through its
corporate foundation, Yayasan MEC before it has
even commenced commercial activities. Its
Commitment to Action has a value of 500,000,
which the company will self-fund. By working with
CGI, MEC Holdings will gain access to world-class
partners, expertise and guidance as it kicks off
the initial phase of this crucial long-term
project. Together, MEC Holdings and CGI will
bring global best practices to East Kutai as they
begin scaling up efforts to benefit the
community.

We are extraordinarily pleased to be making a
commitment through the Clinton Global Initiative
as we seek to improve quality of life and ensure
sustainability in East Kutai, said Madhu Koneru,
Executive Vice Chairman of MEC Holdings. I am
extremely passionate about this project, and I am
thrilled to have the opportunity to turn that
passion into a real commitment to enact social
change and benefit local communities. Residents
of the 15 villages impacted by the companys
operations currently lack adequate access to
clean drinking water and medical care, and a
large number of children are unable to attend
school on a regular basis due to transportation
shortages. MEC Holdings will initially address
the needs of these communities in a comprehensive
manner through a five year corporate social
responsibility plan, to be implemented by the
Yayasan MEC, designed to make improvements in
local quality of life. The plan calls for
permanent infrastructure upgrades, clean drinking
water and sanitation facilities, improved medical
facilities and care, and funding for education
programs. It builds on MECs existing 500,000
sponsorship of Indonesias Pintar charity, which
works to increase educational opportunities for
underprivileged youths.

By working hand-in-hand with the community, MEC
Holdings envisages creating a win-win environment
in which both the company and local villagers are
able to prosper sustainably over the course of
the long term. This Commitment to Action is not
the end, Koneru said. It is just the beginning.

step forward in this long and exciting journey.
