1950s - Television
  • With the invention of the Television, American
    lives changed forever.
  • Before Television, family time was spent playing
    card games, board games, and listening to the
    radio.
  • Families also spent most of their spare time
    reading and going outdoors for recreation.
  • The new invention was usually situated inside a
    big mahogany chest.
  • By the late 50s it was a stand alone set.

    their origins in radio, where they had been
    popular for decades.
  • For the most part, radio sitcoms featured adults
    and regular adult storylines, and this trend
    carried over to television.

  • For children and teenagers there were shows like
    The Mickey Mouse Club, the Romper Room, Captain
    Kangaroo, Howdy Doody etc.
  • For Teenagers the one show that they would all
    want to watch would be American Bandstand. This
    show brought home a new Rock Star every time the
    show aired.

  • Ladies usually wore dresses or skirts.
  • Hair was usually short or in a pony tail .
  • A girdle was usually worn if you were wearing a
    dress.
  • Accessories hats, gloves, saddle shoes, penny
    loafers, bobby socks, cat's-eye glasses,
    detachable Peter Pan collars, pearl necklaces
  • Clothing strapless evening gowns, jeans
    trousers for women, sweater sets, poodle skirts,
    suits, full skirts
