The Big Picture
  • With the help of many people other than soldiers,
    the Americans were successful.
  • It took 8 years for a peace treaty to be signed.
  • You will now learn about the men women who made
    it possible to bring the war to an end.

Patriots in the West On the Seas
  • George Rogers Clark captured Fort Vincennes
    was retaken by the British. However, Clark did
    not give up! In February 1779, Clark his men
    attacked won!
  • By winning this area, America now controlled the
    Ohio River Valley.
  • Clark is considered Washington of the West.

Patriots Fight on the Seas
  • John Paul Jones our first naval hero
  • September 1779, Bonhomme Richard, faced the
    British battleship Serapis.
  • British American battleships fought to the end!
    Jones would not give up! After 3 hours of
    fighting the British ship surrendered.

Patriots Fight in the Colonies
  • Benedict Arnold he helped win Fort Ticonderoga
    Saratoga. However, he married a woman from a
    Loyalist family. He was spoiled but soon was in
    a great deal of debt.
  • In 1780, Washington gave Arnold command of West
    Point, a key fort on New Yorks Hudson River.

  • However, in exchange for money, Arnold told the
    British about West Points defense.
  • Later, Americans found out and Arnold became an
    officer for the British army.
  • British soldiers never trusted him however.
  • Today, a Benedict Arnold is someone who is a
    traitor to ones country.

  • Mary Ludwig Hays helped give thirsty soldiers
    water.
  • Her nickname is Molly Pitcher
  • Deborah Sampson she disguised herself as a man
    and fought as soldiers.
  • Dicey Langston served as a spy
  • Haym Salomon spied for the Patriots when the
    British captured New York City. He also raised
    money for the Continental Army.

The Spanish Help the Patriots
  • After France joined the war, Spain followed.
  • Bernardo de Galves who became governor of
    Spanish Louisiana opened up the port of New
    Orleans to American ships and ended British trade
    with Louisiana.

Battles in the Southern Colonies
  • March, 1781, Guilford Court House, North Carolina
    Cornwallis last ¼ of his men during the fierce
    battle.
  • Although there were victories, it left Cornwallis
    with little supplies weakened armies.

The End of the War
  • James Armistead was asked to spy on the Americans
    by the British, however, he was already working
    for America. Therefore, he gave the British
    false information and tricked Cornwallis into
    thinking he was going to attack New York.
  • On October 19, 1781, Cornwallis surrendered
    because American and French soldiers surrounded
    Yorktown.
  • The Battle of Yorktown was the last major battle
    of the Revolution.

End of the War
  • Treaty of Paris of 1783 ended the war and finally
    recognized the independence of the United States.
  • This gave the people the chance to form a new
    kind of government.
