- We are a volunteer-driven, non-profit charitable
organization dedicated to increasing literacy in
Ontario. - LLO supports 45 community-based literacy programs
that utilize the services of volunteer tutors and
trainers.
2What is Literacy?
- Literacy is the ability of adults to use written
information to function in society, to achieve
their goals and to develop their knowledge and
potential. - (IALS Survey Definition- STATSCAN/94)
3What do the Stats Tell Us?
- The groundbreaking Adult Literacy and Life Skills
Survey released in 2005 by StatsCan and the
Organization for Economic Co-operation and
Development provides the following insight - 15 of Canadians have great difficulty reading.
- 27 of Canadians have limited skills and can read
but not well. - 39 of Canadians have the minimum reading skills.
- 19 of Canadians have strong literacy skills.
4This means that
- 42 of Canadian adults need help with their
reading and writing. - Poor literacy costs Ontario business at least 1.6
billion. (StatsCan 1990) - Literacy affects employees health and safety,
peoples employment opportunities, and their
ability to become your customer.
5What We Do
- Our volunteer tutors provide 1 to 1 instruction
to adults. - Laubach certified trainers deliver both practical
and professional training to volunteers.
- We support volunteers by providing
- continuous training and professional development
opportunities via workshops, conferences,
research and field projects. - The volunteer tutoring we provide annually
represents approximately 5 million worth of
individualized education for literacy students.
6How We Do It
- The Laubach Way to Reading is a structured,
sequential method of reading that is phonetically
based.
- It was developed by world-recognized literacy
pioneer Frank C. Laubach in 1930, and it is
currently used in over 300 countries. - Tutors use LLOs authentic materials, adult
learning principles, lesson planning, and
sensitivity to the adult learner to meet
individual needs.
