The Prayer of Jesus

• A prayer of Jesus to the Father
• Shortly before His betrayal
• What things were on the Lords mind before His
  coming death?
• In this lesson, we will look at just one example
  what was on His mind for His future disciples

John 1720-23
I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for
those also who believe in Me through their word
that they all may be one even as You, Father,
are in Me, and I in You that they also may be in
Us, so that the world may believe that You sent
Me. The glory which You have given Me I have
given to them, that they may be one, just as We
are one I in them, and You in Me that they may
be perfected in unity, so that the world may
know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as
You have loved Me.

• They want the same things!

The Human Relationship

• Can you imagine the Father and the Son in a
  battle of wills?
• Why not?
• If we all have the same will (to do Gods will),
  would there be fights and arguments among us?
• When there is strife, it is because someone is
  exercising self-will
• Jas 41-3

• The Father and Son speak the same things
• Do we speak the same things?
• If we all accept book, chapter, and verse we
  can speak the same things
• If we allow each to make up there own
  interpretations of scripture, then we will have
  division
• 1 Cor 110

• In our society we extol individualism and
  diversity
• In God, we put away ourselves our own
  ambitions, our own desires
• Phil. 22-3

Jesus wanted us to have

• Unity like He had with the Father
• Having the same will
• Speaking the same things
• Doing the same things
• Do we have such unity?
• If not, what can we do to achieve it?

What Can We Do?
Individuals Families Local Church

Individuals

• Recognize that we pledged
• To serve and obey Christ
• To carry out His will, not our own
• Realize unity begins with ME
• If you are causing strife, then you are not
  working for unity
• Repent and act upon that repentance

Families

• What are we showing to the next generation?
• There is a reason why so many of the young people
  fail to obey the gospel, leave the church, or
  simply become unfaithful
• If we cant show unity in our example, then the
  next generation wont even try

Local church

• Preach and teach only the gospel
• Work together to spread the gospel
• Test everything against the word of God
• Remove false teachers
• Discipline the disorderly
• Resist compromise

Conclusion

• John 1723
• If we have unity it will aid in our ability to
  save the lost
• If we have strife and division, then our efforts
  to save the lost will be hindered
