2Introduction
- Slovakia (The Slovak Republic) is land located
country with 5,455,407 (July 2008 est.)
inhabitants and area of 49,035 km² situated
between - Austria (91 km),
- Czech Republic (215 km)
- Hungary (677 km),
- Poland (444 km)
- The Ukraine (97 km)
- Western Carpathian Mountains with the highest
point in the republic - Gerlachovský Peak, at
2,655 meters (8,711 feet) and two large lowland
areas dominate the topography of Slovakia.
3Capital city Bratislava Administrative divisions
of Slovakia
- Bratislava is an important port on the Danube and
a railway junction, Slovakia's largest city.
- Bratislava was Founded before the 10th century.
Strong fortifications erected during the 12th
century gave it strategic importance.
- From 1541 to 1784 it was the capital of Hungaria.
In 1805, during the Napoleonic Wars, Bonaparte
met the Holy Roman Emperor Francis II in the city
and imposed the peace terms known as the Treaty
of Pressburg. - When Czechoslovakia was created in 1918 after
World War I, the city was renamed Bratislava and
made capital of the province of Slovakia. Since
January 1, 1993 Bratislava became the capital of
