What is a GT?
  • Any student who is achieving significantly
    higher than their peers.

Purpose of tonight
  • To inform parents of what is available to your
    son / daughter at North Kesteven School in this
    academic year.
  • To let parents know more about the national
    picture on GT support.
  • To introduce the possibilities for the future.

  • Differentiated learning in all classes
  • GT opportunities to be made increasingly
    available in all subject areas

    discuss progress and development alongside the
    usual Head of year and tutor route.

  • So do their parents.
  • Very bright children can be very difficult if
    their needs are not managed.

    has become live and exciting in September 2008.

  • I would like to see a new wave of NK students

  • Identification through SATs, CATs, teacher
    assessments, tutor knowledge and parental input.
  • Streaming by Christmas in Science and Maths.
  • GT opportunities from the CfBT in Lincs on
    Challenge Plus events with years 5,6 helping with
    transition.

Year 8
  • Further screening in individual subjects
  • 30 selected as target generic group for
    voluntary enrichment classes based on
    recommendation from various sources.
  • Interschool quiz team. Junior Challenge.
  • Increased access to higher level thinking skills
    and tasks in the classroom
  • Maths Challenge
  • Space centre trip May 2008

Year 8
  • Student research programme with Ms Fox as part of
    student voice , learning research skills
    investigating educational experiences.

  • Great courses in Year 8 and 9. Y8 extension

  • New approaches in the curriculum to allow more
    individual work to access higher level
    assessments such as personal research programmes.
  • Early entry GCSEs.

  • English Speaking union for top debaters
  • Trip to theatre in Sheffield to support GCSE
    studies
  • Science trip
  • Attendance at NAGTY run course on Forensics held
    at RP and Loughborough University for Sport GT
    day.

Year 11
  • Fast track maths group went to Birmingham to
    raise A grades to A at GCSE
  • National Extension College courses (GCSEs done in
    the students own time at cost of 300 per
    subject)

  • Students are able to access support from staff
    through the mentoring programme which can include
    GT students.

Student voice
  • A very notable addition to NK where many able
    students are able to express their opinions, take
    on research and present to people both in school
    and at regional levels.

Year 12 13
  • Oxbridge support in school and linking with other
    schools.
  • OU modules in Science and Arts. Next one is
    science to start May 2008. Contact Miss Yarsley
    for more details.
  • AS course on critical thinking.
  • Awareness support of GT at this level.

Intervention
  • Meetings with parents carers to discuss
    progress and issues.
  • Offers of opportunities to extend range and depth
    in selected areas both in school and out eg YGT
    and summer schools in either the county or more
    nationally advertised.
  • I also target and interview GT students.

Lincoln Specialist Schools Group
  • 7 x GT Lead teachers meet regularly.
  • Share good practice with departments across
    schools.
  • Offer an even wider range of opportunities
  • Work together to share guest speakers.
  • Your children will be able to access
    opportunities at NK and other schools at various
    times. Watch this website and look for links to
    the LSSG.

What Mrs Wood does!!
  • Monitors and develops action plan
  • Liaises with parents.
  • INSET on GT to other schools (IQS)
  • Leads the Lincoln Specialist Schools (7)
  • Markets NKs GTs extensively eg Oxford Brookes
    University, YGT so that we are known nationally.
  • Attends national conferences and gets invitations
    for national seminars.
  • Actively seeks additional funding for GT
    ventures..

The Future
  • The School website holds further details,
    internet links and opportunities for GT under
    students / gifted and talented / links for
    parents to the ygt website.

Aims for next 12 months
  • Every department progressing with support for GT
    students in the classroom.
  • Effective tracking and monitoring of the GT
    students and additional support given as
    necessary.
  • Students feeling suitably challenged, not bored
    and knowing where to find new stuff.

  • Some parents have created opportunities for our
    GTs through their own contacts.
  • If you have GT experience yourself, you might
    like to get involved with some of the new
    curriculum developments.
  • You may know of exciting opportunities that I
    have missed. Please feel free to alert me to good
