allowed to go out of the country and I think
many, who didnt have families in the west, would
have chosen to. It was also far easier for West

3Wirtschaftswunder
Wirtschaftswunder is German for economic
miracle. The term is used to describe the
successes of West Germanys (and Austrias)
recovery after the second World War. This
economic miracle began in 1948 but was put
under strain in the early 1990s largely due to
the cost of unification. A combination of growth
and strength in the economic system made it one
of the most respected in the world.
The division of Germany was caused by the
differences in opinion of the four largest
powers. These powers were France, United States,
Great Britain and the Soviet Union. After Germany
gave in, the four powers, no longer unified in
their visions of post-war Europe, decided to
divide Germany into four military zones with a
joint military government until they could agree
on Germanys future. This didnt work and Germany
soon became the battlefield for the Cold War.
This resulted in the division of Germany into two
states. The Soviets zone became East Germany and
the other three became West Germany.
4Berlin Wall
Construction on the Berlin wall started on August
13 1961 and November 9 1989 is considered the day
the wall fell.
The wall was constructed because the four powers
controlled different parts of Germany and Berlin
as well and when they couldnt agree they divided
the country and Berlin as well.
Where the wall bisected the city and where the
checkpoints, where people could pass from East to
West Germany and the other way round, were.
5Border of East and West Germany
Fence that divided East and West Germany
The fence was built around East Germany to
separate East and West Germany after the
division. It wasnt so much to keep the West out
but to stop the East defecting to West Germany or
somewhere else.
