- PURITANS Radical English Protestants who wanted
the Anglican Church to rid itself of similarities
to Catholicism.

- Predestination Most souls will go to hell. God
chose a few (the elect) at the beginning of time
who will go to heaven. - Conversion Signs that one is among the elect.
- Covenant of works God will reward or punish
entire communities for the doings of its members.

1.) Separatists want a complete break with
Anglican Church. 2.) Non-separatists want to
purify the church from within (more common type).

- Puritans believed God would punish England if the
Anglican Church did not purify itself of Catholic
practices. - 1600s Puritans began facing persecution.

- Arrive in fall
- Most Indians are already dead from diseases
caught from traders. - Most Pilgrims die the first winter.
- Next year brings bountiful harvests and new

14More Puritans Come to Massachusetts
- 1630 John Winthrop leads the Massachusetts Bay
Companys new colony. - They settle area between Boston and Salem (see
map on previous slide) - Set up a theocracy a state where the Church
runs the government.
15Puritan Communities in Mass.
- Strong spirit of community
- Intense religious atmosphere
- No tolerance for religious dissent or
disagreement in religious matters
Puritans believed that God would punish the
entire community if individual sins were not
punished by the community.

ROGER WILLIAMS banished from Salem in 1636 for
many beliefs, among them, that Indians were equal
before God and deserved fair treatment.
Indians help him found Rhode Island, first colony
with total religious freedom

MARY DYER Quaker Banished in 1638 Returned to
Boston. Banished again. Returned to
Boston. Banished again. Returned to Boston. The
were going to execute her, but instead, banished
her again. Returned to Boston to protest the
anti-Quaker law. This time, they hanged her. SHE
WAS THE ONLY PERSON TO DIE FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM
IN AMERICA
