3What Does Emergency Management Do?
- EMA is responsible for
- Coordinating the acquisition of resources during
emergencies/disasters to support local
agencies/departments such as Fire, Police, EMS,
Public Works etc. - Coordinating multi-agency, multi-jurisdictional
responses in Memphis and Shelby County. - Providing and running the Emergency Operations
Center (EOC) during large emergencies/disasters. - Coordinating State and Federal emergency
management training for Shelby County. - Writing, exercising and up-dating the Emergency
Management Plan for Shelby County.

- Incidents
- We respond to Haz-Mat scenes to provide chemical
information using books, computers or information
faxed to our vehicle. - We coordinate the evacuation and shelter of
citizens from the area. - We make notifications to appropriate local, state
and federal authorities.

- Events
- EMA is responsible for sounding the outdoor
warning sirens (tornado sirens) in Memphis and
most of Shelby County. - We alert City/County officials of impending
weather events. - We take reports of damage (trees down, flooding,
structure damage) from Police, Fire, EMS and
citizens.

- We perform damage assessment for areas that
receive weather related damage. - We coordinate with TEMA and FEMA to receive
disaster assistance for the affected area. - We coordinate the evacuation and shelter of
citizens from the damaged area.

- We respond to major and multi-alarm fires.
- We coordinate the evacuation and shelter of
citizens from the area. - We coordinate the feeding of emergency workers on
extended incidents.

- We respond to air crashes.
- We activate the hospital disaster call tree for
mass casualty crashes. - We coordinate the response between Fire, Police,
NTSB, FAA, etc.

- We respond to special rescue situations.
- We coordinate resources such as cranes, front-end
loaders, and other specialized equipment that is
needed.

such as Fire, Police, FBI etc. - We coordinate the evacuation and shelter of
citizens from the area. - We coordinate the dissemination of information to
