At Kirby, the career ladder can be climbed
quickly and can lead to dynamic, exciting, and
highly rewarding positions within the marine
industry. From your entry into our basic
seamanship program, you can be earning 31,400
annually by the end of your first year And, just
18 months from entry, you can become eligible to
apply for our Wheelhouse Apprentice Mate
(Steersman) program where you will learn how to
pilot a Kirby towboat. With an additional 18
months of work, you can become a Mate (pilot) of
a towing vessel and earn 80,300 per year!

Entrance into Phase I
- Candidate
- Must have been employed as a deckhand/Tankerman
for a minimum of 18 months and reached Tankerman
Level 3 or equivalent mates position - Must have a written Masters recommendation and
three written character references for licensing
as Apprentice Mate - Must receive Wheelhouse Review Board approval.
- Must have completed Kirbys Basic Deckhand,
Tankerman PIC Firefighting and First Aid/CPR
classes or approved equivalent - Must complete USCG physical less than 1 year old
- Must pass Phase I exam with a score of 80 Rules
of the Road, 90 ETAs or better
