Introduction
  • Who am I?
  • Who are you?
  • What are we doing here?
  • Management issues
  • The text
  • The syllabus
  • The calendar
  • Questions?

3
Why Study Language Structure?
  • Linguistic structure supports communication in
    both
  • Oral language (listening speaking
  • and
  • Written language (reading writing)

4
Layers of Language Processing
  • Speech sounds (phonemes)
  • Meaning chunks (morphemes words)
  • Written language (orthography)
  • Semantics
  • Syntax

5
Neuro-linguistic Processing
  • People who have weak linguistic awareness are
    less able to
  • remember new and/or complex words
  • sound out words from print
  • spell words
  • interpret punctuation
  • interpret long or complex sentences

6
Your Personal (Language) Trainer.
  • Just as physical exercise can build endurance and
strength, so language practice can build language
    processing accuracy and speed.

7
Language interventionists must have an
understanding of..
  • How the brain learns language (spoken written)
  • The structure of language (spoken written)
  • Pedagogy (how to teach)

8
Speech to Print (Moats, p. 7)
  • Linguistic units are neither auditory nor visual
they are abstract, mental phenomena and can be
understood even by people who are hard of
hearing. Because our attention is on meaning, we
are not aware of the code translation process by
which meaning is conveyed. Nor should we
be---unless we must teach someone the same
process deliberately, step by step. ..Thus, to
understand printed language well enough to teach
it explicitly requires conscious study of its
systems and forms, both spoken and written.
    (p.7).

9
Think-Pair-ShareEXERCISE!
  • How many speech sounds are in your first name?
  • What letter(s) represent each of the speech
    sounds in your first name?

10
Example
  • I have 5 speech sounds in my first name
  • /s-æ-n-d-? /

S a n d ie
...and 5 graphemes (but 6 letters)
