Current Status and Future Directions
  • HISP Ethiopia Team

HISP - Global
  • A global Research and Development network around
    health information systems in developing
    countries.
  • Building synergies between informatics and public
    health.
  • Supporting health reforms eg, HISP national
    standard in South Africa. (see www.hisp.org)
  • Research 15 Phd students doing thesis within
    HISP framework registered at the University of
    Oslo.
  • Education 25 students doing Masters studies
    within HISP framework.
  • Enabling global benchmarks, such as open source
    platform, data standards etc.
  • Enabling south-south-north collaborative networks

Funding Sources
  • Global network supported by Norwegian Aid,
    Norwegian research council, EU, Health Metrics
    Network.
  • Locally, in respective countries, funding from
    various sources like national health ministries,
    USAID, Dutch Aid, national governments etc.
  • PhD and Masters students funded through Norwegian
    government scholarship program.
  • Total funding globally to the extent of over 1
    Million Euros per year.
  • In Ethiopia, Approx 200,000 USD contributed since
    2003 by EU and Norwegian Goverment (60 for
    implementation and 40 for students scholarship -
    approx)

Data standardization
  • Standardization efforts started in Addis data
    sets and data collection instruments

Capacity Building
  • Masters courses currently 2 health staff doing
    Public Health studies in Maputo, funded by NORAD
  • Two health bureau staff supported to attend
    intensive HMIS course in Tanzania
  • Curently two courses (HIS and GIS for health)
    being conducted in AAU.
  • Proposal being developed for establishng Masters
    and doctoral programs in HIS at AAU.
  • Around 10 training sessions of 1-2 weeks period
    held on DHIS software, computer basics, and using
    information for action
  • Seeking to make HMIS courses as part of
    curriculum in diploma programs of health colleges
    in regions where we are working

System Development Efforts
  • DHIS 1.3 (from South Africa) customized for
    Addis, eg by adding Mortality Morbidity module.
    Currently implemented in 3 regions
  • DHIS 1.3 is migrated to 1.4, and field transition
    process started in Oromia.

  • Four pairs of students involved in evaluation in
    Addis and Oromia
  • The HMN evaluation tool being used for the
    evaluation
  • Evaluation will provide inputs for diagnosis of
    problems planning future improvements
