General Information
  • Settled by Celtic tribes in 4th century B.C.
  • Norsemen began invading in late 8th century A.D.
  • Invasions ended when King Brian BORU defeated the
    Danes in A.D. 1014.

  • The English began invading in the 12th Century
  • This began many centuries of fierce battle
    between the Irish and the English.
  • In 1916, the Easter Monday Rebellion got many
    areas in Ireland freedom from the U.K.
  • 1948 Ireland left the British Commonwealth.
  • Dublin is the capital city.

  • In 1973, Ireland became a member of the European
    Community.
  • The government in Ireland has had serious
    problems with terrorism, and they have since
    cooperated with the British government in an
    effort to halt these attacks.
  • The Good Friday Agreement is a peace settlement
    for Northern Ireland and was approved in 1998.
  • They are trying to put it into effect now.
