Title: Weather

1
Weather
  • Natural Disasters

2
WEATHER
  • The state of the air around us.
  • We measure the air as hot or cold, wet or dry,
calm or stormy, clear or cloudy.
  • Temperature-how we measure the air as hot or
    cold.
  • Humidity-how we measure the air as wet or dry.

3
Hurricanes
  • Hurricanes begin as tropical storms.
  • Hurricanes are large wind storms with winds
blowing faster than 74 miles per hour!!! They
    can be miles across.
  • Hurricanes happen over a body of water when there
is warm water, a lot of moisture in the air, and
    a certain wind pattern.
  • Hurricanes bring rain, thunder, lightning, and
    sometimes tornadoes.

4
How We Measure Hurricanes
  • There are five categories of hurricanes.
  • Hurricanes in category 1 are the least damaging.
Winds can get up to 95 miles per hour. Most
buildings are safe, although mobile homes may be
at risk because of the high winds. Some coastal
    flooding might occur.
  • A Category 5 Hurricane is the most damaging. It
can reach winds of 155 miles per hour or higher.
Many buildings and roofs are at risk, with heavy
flooding. Massive evacuation may be required.

5
TORNADOES
  • Tornadoes are dangerous wind storms that occur on
dry land. They are smaller than hurricanes.
  • They happen when warm moist air mixes with hot
dry air, or warm mist air mixes with cold air.
  • Most tornadoes happen in Tornado Alley.

6
FLOODS
  • They can happen because of too much rain and the
rain has no where to go.
  • They occur when a barrier, like a dam, breaks and
the water is free to flow.
  • Floods occur, or happen, when there is too much
    water in one place.
  • Hurricanes can also cause floods when there eye
    wall hits shore.

7
EARTHQUAKES
  • Earthquakes happen when plates of the earth
    collide.
  • One plate goes under, and one plate goes up.
This is how mountains are formed.
  • Big earthquakes can kill many people. They can
cause buildings, bridges, and even roads to
    collapse.

8
BLIZZARDS
  • Blizzards are dangerous snow storms.
  • There are three conditions for a blizzard.
  • Strong winds over 35 miles per hour (mph).
  • It must be snowing so hard, you cant see farther
    than 4 football fields away.
  • It must be snowing this hard for at least 3
    hours.
  • In one blizzard, it snowed more than 5 feet in
    one day!!!

9
VOLCANOES
  • Volcanoes happen when magma breaks through the
    outer crust of the earth.
  • Magma is very hot, melted rock in the center of
    the earth.
  • When the liquid magna (lava) cools, it becomes
    igneous rock.
  • Hawaii and Japan are islands that were formed
    from volcanoes.
